Will there ever be new editions of the major systems?

Correct.

There is no such thing.

Incorrect.
Wow, you want to give more than just one-word answer here? Something to support your claim?

And yes, half-editions are a thing. It's why it was called 3.5 and not 4e. You can call it a revised edition if you prefer, but that's just nitpicking on the name.

And no, it doesn't matter what Call of Cthulhu does or how much or how little they alter their products when they put out a new edition because Chaosium isn't TSR or WotC.

3.5 felt like an edition change in the vein of AD&D 1e-2e, or L5R, or the Pendragons or Cyberpunks. And I will fight tooth and nail against the idea that any issue affecting the hobby and/or industry as a whole is irrelevant if it's different from D&D's take, from any edition, so I'm with you there.

What makes TSR or WotC so special in any way other than market share?

Incorrect. That’s a made-up term and it has no meaning.

As repeatedly stated, the word “edition” is not defined by WotC.

We’re not talking about WotC. We’re talking about the concept of an edition. See the thread title. This isn’t even in the D&D forum, it’s in the TTRPG General forum. Not everything is about D&D.

Considering that most people know what you're talking about if you use the term D&D half edition, it has an accepted meaning.

As repeatedly stated, the word “edition” is not defined by WotC.
OK? So we can only use terms as WotC has defined them?

That particular chain of comments was about D&D, not about all games.
