Win 2000 hardware check?

I'm trying to put in some more DDR so that I can play Morrowind without getting those annoying "out of virtual memory" messages. However, with the second 256 meg chip installed, I haven't noticed any play difference, and the messages are still appearing. Also, I right-clicked on "My Computer" to check the system specs, and it said that I only had 266,000 K memory (plus some change), when I should have about twice that.

I suspect that the motherboard socket with the new strip is burnt out or somehow nonfunctional. Is there some way to check through Windows to see if it's working?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there.

If your motherboard have more than two DIMM-slots (where you put the memory sticks), move the second stick to another DIMM-slot and try.

Particularly older VIA-chips (the athlon thunderbird generation) have problems with RAM.

The other slot is full, unfortunately. That's why I suspect it's the slot, and not the chip, since I'm using the exactly same make and model chip in the other slot. And this is an Athalon-compatible motherboard (though I don't remember the exact manufacturer).

Ah, well. I guess I'll have to swap the chips out, then I'll see if it's the slot or not. If it is, I'll just have to limp along for a while, not getting a new motherboard anytime soon.
