Winter Fantasy 2005

I wish I were, but the last-minute schedule change from RPGA moved Winter Fantasy from a nice date in February to right on top of my wife's birthday. So, going to WF would cost me more Spouse Points than I currently have in the bank. :D

I stopped by tonight and the tables were happenin'. There were some good maps and great 3D model setups, but I have no idea which game it was for. I talked to some players in the FR Legend of the Green Regent that had ended early, and they were pretty pleased with the event. As for the game, there were a lot of complaints that were aimed at 'Living' campaign support and such, but that's too be expected.

I'm gonna try to make the 8:00 AM (!) game time tomorrow, and will definitely be there for the afternoon. What will I be playing? Whatever, gimme a sheet and let me roll, baby!

WF was great fun yesterday, and I'm glad I got more than one game in. I played Legacy of the Green Regent (Living Forgotten Realms) and discovered why there was a lot of talk about the tough encounters and looong time it took to get through them. There were nothing but TPKs for us, and the one happened in the second encounter of 5 (!) after it took us an hour to get through a puzzle. The other was a nasty caster that had too many quickened spells and some huge pets to keep us busy.

The Judges were awesome, I really have a new appreciation of those with enough patience to deal with 6 new players at each session they run. Some of them ran 3 of 3 sessions a day then retreated to their hotel rooms to finally get a chance to be on the other side of the screen.

Also I got to meet Keith Baker and see a few of the great artists in the genre. It was a good time and I look forward to the next one.

Green Regent's combats are pretty tough particularly the specials. I like the campaign but the combats could be lowered.

I played Living Greyhawk and Kalamar and judged Eberron and Kalamar. I had a pretty good time. I drove down from Michigan and stayed with family who live about 20 minutes away in Maryland. I plan on attending GenCon Indy too and I'll try and play the Green Regent mods there and catch the WF mods at home.

I got to use my "old lady" voice DMing the Eberron mod and it was fun.

The models were used for the Eberron Special Delve Event "Death in Darguun." We were given the go-ahead to use them by the RPGA when developing the event through some deal with the Miniature Building Authority. They really do look great, although they are sometimes hard to work with in a game-play situation.

For the Eberron Special Delve at GenCon, I think we are going to be able to use them again, plus some Dwarven Forge models as well. We're looking forward to it.
