wish spell rules?

Just to give you guys some more information on the situation: the efreet in question WAS summoned by way of ring, and thus, DID want to distort the wish. Whats more, we started off this game agreeing to the terms of the wish spell that the DM set...he's not pulling a fast one over on any of us. In fact, we enjoy playing the wish spell with the monkey's paw clause...since wish comes up so rarely in our game, so far, it adds a real element of danger to wishing, which we all (both players and dm's) enjoy. Our question doesn't have to do with if this is a fair varient rule or not.

The problem is this: because spells/spell like ablilities/monster ablities and the like occasionally have the "cannot be undone without the use of wish/miracle" discriptor, do you think the monkey's paw clause upsets game balance IN THIS INSTANCE? By which, I mean, does it make those spells/ablities with the "cannot be undone without the use of wish/miracle" more powerful because it involves casting a spell that will likely come with a twist?

Thanks for all the imput, please keep it coming!

In no way should a wish that is required to get rid of a "wish/miracle to remove" malady be twisted by the DM.

As an aside, as a player what I usually did, which seemed to work pretty well, was in a situation where you're getting multiple wishes from a hostile entity, like an efreet that wants to twist your wishes just to be contrary, offer it a deal: you will use the last wish to the creature's benefit, in a manner it proscribes, as long as such doesn't impact on you or your companions et al in any negative fashion. In return, the creature doesn't screw you on the other wishes.

Very clever! I think I'm gonna try this routine w/ my DM the next time a genie-type item pops up.

guys a wish (with great power) should e bashed with the fuuuuuuu hammer but a wish to of i wish for my fellows to be brought back to life well that does not need smi quies lawyers

A wish spell should allow a user to cast any spell below (what was it 7th level?) freely without any problems. Wishing for someone to be true ressed is perfectly fine. They shouldn't come back as an undead or some troll reincarnation.

Wishing to have a curse removed should be fine.

Wishing for all the money in the world should simply not work and should result in a loss of a wish spell. You should make it abundantly clear to your players that the wish spell can only do so much and asking TOO MUCH of the wish spell can result in the spell being lost. This will make them act more reasonably for risk of losing the wish.

If they wish for ultimate power and the source of the wish is a wish ring or something evil then you could turn them into some kind of demon that's stronger. If they're in a good party, they better get ready to fight their party.

Just my 2c.
