Wish Variant

IMC, I've removed all references to, and rules dealing with X.P. The hows are not that involved (different rules for magic item creation), and all spells that involve XP cost, I apply some other form of balancing factor to.

The only one that really gave me difficulty was wish.

Which led me to this variant, of which I haven't formally written out yet, and still will require a bit of work on my part, but I wanted to toss this out for some good ol'-fashioned ENWorld feedback.

My version of wish would work exactly the same if you're using the spell to emulate another spell. That has not changed.

If you're using the spell to create some fabulous event to happen as in the historical significance of the spell, then what wish actually does is summons a powerful extra-planar creature who fulfills the conditions of the wish. Sort of like the way it works in Baldur's Gate II, I suppose. Except, the creature summoned would be random, and so would their attempt at subverting the wish.

So, I'd have to create a huge chart of powerful extra-planar creatures, and then randomize which ones show up when the spell is cast. It's highly possible that the creature will geas/quest the spellcaster into performing something that the outer-planar creature desires, or it may ask for treasure, or magic in exchange for its services.

I figure this version of wish, while still powerful, also adds a lot to the game itself, provides the DM (me) with hooks for adventures, and prevents wish from being usable in the middle of combat (it will have some duration, like a round for the summoning, and another duration for the actual exchange of ideas, and then the creature will have to complete whatever task is being asked). So, if the spellcaster casts wish, summons some horrific creature up, and says, "I wish that spellcaster over there was dead", this creature will then go over and attempt to kill the other spellcaster. It's possible, though remote, that the creature summoned could die in the process, or be dismissed, or whatever. So, it's not entirely fool-proof.

Speaking of wish variants, a _long_ time ago, I used to have a file that listed out the possible powers of wish based on a caster level. So, a 40th level wizard could do more with wish than a 17th level wizard. I might have the file at home, but if I don't, anyone have a copy of that, or have something similar?
