Wishes and Aritfacts

Gratch

First Post
I am wondering if I can get some help. I am trying to figure out if I can use a wish spell to affect the size of an aritfact. I have the "Hammer of Thunderbolts". The problem is the item is large and I am not. I know I can just put it down get enlarged and use it w/ out a penalty but I would like to wield it as a regular sized player with out having the peanalty for using a weapon a size bigger then me.

My question is can a wish spell be used to change the size of the aritfact (minor) from large to medium without any ill effects for me or the item?

Sadly, you're in the "effects greater than these" portion of the Wish spell - that's not something on the safe list. It's not normally going to be a broken use by any stretch, but it's not on the safe list. Which means you need to ask the game's referee - the DM.

Strongarm bracers would let you go Mjöllnir jr. and Shield.

I wouldn't try it. Best case scenario: you shrink the entire universe, including the hammer, but remain your own size, effectively becoming larger.

If it wasn't an artifact, it would certainly be a reasonable wish. Modifying artifacts with mortal magic is dangerous. (See Disjunction.)

I'd get a cleric to cast Augury before casting Wish. The cost of Augury is trivial compared to that of Wish, and, unless the effect of the wish is going to takes days or hours to play out, it provides the GM an in-game way to advise you if the action is advisable.

It would be simpler to wish for

a) Strongarm bracers from Magic Item Compendium p.139

When wearing strongarm bracers, you can wield weapons as if you were one size category larger than normal. (You don’t take any penalty when using weapons as normal for your size.) For example, a human wearing these bracers could wield Large or Medium weapons without penalty.
The effect of these bracers doesn’t stack with the powerful build trait (such
as that possessed by the half-giant and goliath races).

b) the powerful build trait see here

c) the Monkey Grip feat

And certainly safer thatn wishing to change an artifact. Also if the hammer got medium it would do less base damage dice.

I want to try it
