Already been done. Not sure if it was DS, or GBA.
Does it play like and have the feel of FFVII? Because that is actually what I meant.

A 3D inteface and newer graphics to make it on par with the later games in the saga.

If you can, pick up a DS and play Dawn of Sorrow. I don't think you'll be disappointed. The prequel to that, Aria of Sorrow came out for the GBA maybe 3 years ago. If you can, find the game used, grab a GBA player and hook it up to your Gamecube (assuming you have one) and enjoy.
The DS can play GBA games to.

Circle of the Moon is the one I think I played, and got quite a bit of play time with it with the various play modes after you won (Enter a special name, play with a different set of stats or weights on various aspects).

I think they made it pretty but not fully 3d, and the interface is fairly unchanged. You're not going to get much more than that though.

I am also looking forward to a new Wii Zelda and Metroid Prime game. Both could have been a bit longer, but they both proved to have very usable and interesting interfaces.

Way more traditional RPGs for the PS3 (and the PSP), sooner rather than later. In particular, I'd love to see:

I like this list, but have to comment on the specifics.

- the next Atelier game (anything from the series: Iris, Lily, something new, whatever) The Ar Tonelico series, which is rooted in Atelier Iris, is getting a sequel, and there is a series being introduced by the same developer called Mana Khemia, which looks a lot like Atelier Iris.

- Suikoden VI+
Sadly, it seems Konami isn't making oen right now. :( Still, eventually...

- Breath of Fire VI+
I really want this too. BoF 1-4 and Dragon Quarter were all great games.

- Final Fantasy Tactics 2 (!)
Yes! And don;t forget its spiritual cousin, Vagrant Story, also needs a sequel.

- Front Mission 6+
Did Front Mission 5 ever even get released in the US? That needs to happen.

- the next Tales game(s)
Do you mean Tales of Innocence for the DS, or Tales of Symphonia 2 for the Wii? Both are coming soon.

- Kingdom Hearts 3+ (as long as they're better than crappy KH2)
A proper KH3 would be great. It seems we are bogged down with numerous spin-offs of that series right now.

- a Chrono Trigger/Cross sequel(s)!
I would really like to see this.

- a full completion of the Xenogears story!
I would much rather see a high-budget remake of Xenogears with a completed story, rather than another monster of a botched project like Xenosaga...

Here is my list...

PS3: White Knight Chronicles and Valkyrie of the Battlefield: The Gallian Chronicles.

Xbox360: Lost Odyssey and Operation Darkness.

For both of those: Devil May Cry 4 and Last Remnant.

Wii: Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Oboro Muramasa Yotouden, and the next Zelda game.

DS: Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, Fire Emblem DS, and Megaman Starforce 2.

PS2: US releases for Super Robot Taisen: Original Generations, and SRT: Original Generations Gaiden would be amazing. A US release of Konami's OZ (Sword of Etheria in Europe, I hear).

PC: Starcraft 2
