Three defenses? Well, that is making it simple... NOT!
As opposed to three saving throws, plus:

AC
flat-footed AC
touch AC
flat-footed touch AC
AC vs incorporeal touch attacks
flat-footed AC vs incorporeal touch attacks
AC vs brilliant energy weapons
flat-footed AC vs brilliant energy weapons

;)

There is a difference between being simple and detailed. :p

Anyway, on topic, I believe that the actual number of spell slots that a spellcaster will have to juggle at any one time will be fairly small, possibly to a maximum of about 6 to 8 per encounter abilities and 6 to 8 per day abilities. What this suggests to me is that spell slots will no longer be tied to spell level. Instead, a spellcaster will be able to fill (or use, if a spontaneous caster) each slot with any spell that he knows. This is similar to how maneuvers are readied in Bo9S.

But... why... wands? I hope that staves are even better than wands, because I hate wands with a passion - I can barely accept them in 3.5E, because I'm thinking magical batteries, while I replace staffs with MIC-style runestaves (which are pretty cool and should find their way into 4E Core-D&D!).

Perhaps wands only improve one spell (Wand of Fireball +1 for example), where a staff adds to many (Staff of Fire +1)

If you don't like wands stylistically, I'm sure you can make another object with the same effect. Sword of Fireball +1 or something.
