Wizard Spells

Well, a Wizard doesn't have to be specialized, so no.

But if you mean a specialized Wizard, then still no. It's just that one of his slots is only for spells of his specialized school. You can use a lower level spell for it, though.

Sorry, you're mistaken on this one.

"Each time a character attains a new wizard level, she gains two spells of her choice to add to her spellbook. These spells represent the results of her research. The two free spells must be of spell levels she can cast. If she has chosen to specialize in a school of magic, one of the two free spells must be from her specialty school." -- PHB, p. 179.

Is that from the 3.0 or 3.5 PHB?

Hmmm I never noticed this before. Talk about crippling certain specializations. This very oddly reduces my characters focus in abjuration, because if he has a chance he always grabs up any scrolls of spells he can learn in the next few levels. Now he has to save an abjuration spell for every even level. I guess I better increase the size of my sources faster than expected.

Cripple how so? Note that of the two bonus spells to be added to a spellbook when a wizard gains a level neither one has to be "available" to the wizard so-to-speak at the time (no need for a scroll, a spellcraft check, or pay a cost to scribe them into the spellbook). The wizard instead simply picks two spells on their spell list and adds them to their spellbook. This is representative of numerous moments of off-camera time utilized by the wizard PC (whenever not under direct control of the player) to study, procure, and master these bonus spells.

Every level, period. You gain two new spells every time you gain a level as a wizard; if you're an abjurer, one of those two free spells has to be an abjuration. (Or, are you saying "even level" because you're getting scrolls of spells at levels you can already know, and the "odd levels" are the ones where you learn a new level?)

If you're only using the PHB spell list, it's not a huge list, granted, but it means you can focus buying / obtaining spells on schools other than abjuration, knowing that you'll be able to get at least 2 "free" ones in every spell level. (I say "at least" because at least one of your free spells has to be in your specialty school, but there's no rule saying you can't take the second freebie in that school, too.)
