Wizards closing some of there're stores.

Long live whatever's a good store. I've got two wizards-owned stores by me. One has sucked for a long time and has just now started to be decent. The other has always been good. The "mom and pop" stores have all sucked, save one that closed a few years ago before the WotC stores came around. I'm not going to hail the wonderfulness of a store because it's owned by a single individual if that individual treats RPGs as not worth their time.

that has been my beef both times I have gone into a WotC store.
the service has been lousy and they didn't have what I was looking for either time. since they publish this stuff I would think that they would keep their own stores stocked. In MY experience that hasn't been the case.;)

<ot>"Wizards closing some of there're stores." = worst misspelling of "their" EVER. There, I said it. :)</ot>

My comic shop sells d20 books and miniatures. Best of all, the owner treats prices like a roll of the die: always round down. :)

local store

too bad its so far away!
I can't complain though, my local store generally gives me a discount. they all know me and I even taught one of them D&D about 10 years before he started working there.

There was an article in the Wallstreet Journal a few weeks ago about Hasbro. It said Hasbro has done better than expected over the past 12 months, mainly due to cost cutting measures, such as lay-offs and such.

It seems like a counter-intuitive business strategy, to fire your staff and close your stores, so your margins look good. However, you also have to remember that all businesses are slaves to the market. And the market has determined that there are too many alternatives and barriers preventing these stores from prospering.

Personally, there isn't any WotC stores near me, and if there was, I doubt I'd go there for more than a curiosity. I buy most of my gaming stuff online. It is fast and convienient, compared to going out anywhere. Even if the store was right next door, I'd probably still by my books from online distributers such as Amazon.

Wizards had gaming stores......? I live in a small town, we have a comic book/gaming store (very rough in a dilapidated building with a ok selection of mainstream stuff.) a Waldon Books and a Books A Million. That's it. If I want something rare or different I have to head to the internet or drive 2 hours. 90% of my books come from Books A Million.

I don't think WOTC is trying to screw anyone over, it's pretty standard buisness practice to keep your mouth shut during the Christmas season (many stores make 30% to 40% of their yearly revenues during the Christmas season). Many stores will close in January for alot of businesses, (we are in a recession) but they don't want to let on to that fact till they have gotten through Christmas. Stores that are not making money will be dropped, that's just how it goes.

Goodbye Wizards stores I hardly knew you, no really I just found out they had any from the post saying they were closing them.

This won't affect me in the slightest. I've never seen a WotC store in my life, and I doubt I ever will. If I want RPG stuff, there are a couple of decent places nearby, plus the internet, whch makes it simple to get hold of anything I want with just a few mouse clicks.
