I wish they would open up the code kind of like facebook...

I think if they did that we'd see a whole lot of gaming "apps" developed, and the place would become a lot more useful.

At least I wish they would build into it a way to update your site remotely- like the ability to say upload pictures directly to the site from a phone like facebook has. I would use it a whole lot more.

I believe that the code and design of the current Wizards forums were purchased from an outside website design studio. Contractually, WotC probably can't do much, but I don't have a clue how that sort of stuff would be handled.

If that is the case, they probably have the right to do what they want with the code, going forward. However, those features are not gimmes - they take real development to pull off, and the current architecture may not support such features well at all.

Which would really suck IMO.

Part of the appeal of sites like facebook is that they allow you to remotely add things to them. A way of allowing your friends and family to be included at any moment with things you find interesting happening in your life.

With Facebook.com, the site is their product. With Wizards.com, the site is just to support the product. I'd rather them keep their focus and investment in the games, not lots of gimmicks for the site.

That said, I think the way Facebook has become so free with apps is just awful. It sounds like a great idea on paper, but the implementation is a mess. Facebook is filled with tons of spam for everyone playing dumb mini-games, many of which are nothing more than elaborate ways to datamine your personal information, make lots of money off micro-transactions to buy advantages in terribly designed games, or are run by or partnered with scam artists and those committing fraud.

I'd hate to see that come to Wizards.com...
