The new plaque will be released in February 2026.

WizKids is releasing a smaller dragon head plaque, this time featuring the 2024 version of the Red Dragon. Announced this week, the new 12-inch Red Dragon Plaque will feature the head of the 2024 Monster Manual version of the Red Dragon. Notably, the dragon plaque will only be about half the weight of previous dragon plaques released by the company, with the new plaque weighing about 7 pounds as opposed to the 14-16 pounds that old plaques weighed. Currently, there's no price point attached to the red dragon.

WizKids has released a series of trophy plaques, featuring dragons, mind flayers, and even an owlbear. Traditionally, the plaques have cost $474.99, with a hefty shipping fee to account for the large size of the box they were placed in.

This one looks goofy IMO. The black on the nose makes it look like a dog's nose, the teeth are comically pearly white and it just looks goofy. It weighs half, meaning the head is likely a hollow rubber mask with some stuffing. No doubt the savings will not be passed on to us.

Here's the original for comparison.

In semi related news, Bertrand the beholder is finally up in our new house! I'd bought him last year but didn't hang him as I knew we'd be moving this year. So go me!

When comparing profile to profile and front to front, I think the new one clearly looks better. One issue I possibly have is, as you noted, the colors. They are very bright and shiny (particularly the teeth). I would want to see it in person though to make a final judgement.

I forgot about this. When I look at it I still get a look on my face like I smelled something horrible. :ROFLMAO:
I have the BG3 WizKids set on sale at my FLGS - when I saw that post I said, "Surely, it can't be THAT bad!"

... So I went and looked at it, and it took me quite some time to even FIND Shadowheart, because I didn't recognize the mini as her, because, if anything, it was WORSE than the one in that picture!

So is this about half the size of the older one. This says 12in for the new (plaque size of overall?) cause the old one had these listed dimensions…Measuring 32-inches tall x 24-inches deep x 18-inches wide….

Why did they redesign the dragons 24 years ago?
Prior to 2000, D&D was pretty inconsistent about how their dragons looked. 3E brought new branding and very particular design for the most iconic creatures, and they mostly stuck to those designs. Lots of creatures were redesigned again in 4E, but the red dragon wasn’t because the design was solid.

These seem like the kinds of things which belong in a game store
Agreed, but whatever. It’s more plastic junk to sell and to convince fans that they must have it. Always consume! A dragon’s head on a plaque is supposed to represent an accomplishment, in this case someone’s ability to shell out $500; congratulations.
