(Slight Hijack) Non-Canon sources of City of Greyhawk Info and Ideas

I got to thinking about other things I've used over the years to flesh out more of the city, since even items like the City of Greyhawk boxed set and The Adventure Begins leave huge swaths of the real estate in the city undetailed. The following items have provided a few nice businesses, places of interest, etc to drop into the city.
  • Waterdeep: City of Splendors (Forgotten Realms) boxed set
  • Freeport: City of Adventure
  • City of Ravensbluff boxed set (as well as the earlier Ravensbluff RPGA modules)
  • Volo's Guide to Waterdeep (Any of the VG's really, but this one especially)
  • Bluffside: City on the edge

And here's a few freebie resources you'll find around the net to help with fleshing out the city:

I've used stuff from these classic metropolises for Greyhawk details too:

City State of the Invincible Overlord (Judges Guild)
City State of the World Emperor (Judges Guild)
Lankhmar City of Adventure (TSR)

To Rich's great lists, I would add WG8 Fate of Istus, which has several GH city adventures, including some set in Greyhawk itself IIRC. Find copies of Gygax's Saga of Old City and other Gord novels, and you'll get a good depiction of Greyhawk from them, too.

There are several older, non-Greyhawk OOP products that could be of use: hack out of part of one adventure and import into another. You can often found at conventions and/or used sections of gaming stores, or on eBay fairly cheaply:

  • Chaosium's Sanctuary box set
  • the Citybook series from Blade/Flying Buffalo
  • Cities from Midkemia Press (I just found one of these for $4 last weekend!)
  • TSR's City of Lankhmar (1e version; apparently the 2e versions aren't so good)
  • the various Warhammer FRPG city supplements and adventures (Marienburg, Warhammer City, etc.)
  • Geanavue (sp?), a Kenzer city book by Ed Greenwood
  • various old Dragon adventures, in particular "Barnacus: City in Peril" (Dragon 80 or so)

Enjoy!

Using Forgotten Realms stuff to flesh out Greyhawk?

Thanks for the tips. :)

And if you are willing to go outside of ADD/d20, check out WFRP's Marienburg: Sold down the River. Excellent city sourcebook describing a city somewhat similar to CoG. I think that Marienburg has given me more ideas than any other city sourcebook and I do not even own WFRP.

Cheers.:)
