When a character is below 0 and dying, does any healing end the slow countdown or does it need to be done as Emergency First Aid?

Is there a way for a character to stabilize on their own? It seems like the slow countdown by itself means the character will likely eventually die if not attended by someone else.

Yes, healing ends it if it takes the character back above zero.

The countdown is "dying" -- so yeah, if somebody doesn't help them, they die. It's not just mere unconsciousness (which is what happens if the attacker chooses to make that final attack non-lethal).
