WoL and Identify

I'm not a big fan of Tome and Battle, but that doesn't mean I go into threads discussing about those game mechanics just to dump on the system.

I'm not dumping on the system just because I don't like the idea of a weapon growing with its wielder. It's a very nice idea. It's just a horrible implementation of that idea.

I understand the reasoning behind the penalties; you get an item that's more powerful than you'd ordinarily get at the level. This makes sense up to a point.

However, the items in WoL are, IMNAAHO, in no way worth their penalties. The abilities are not so powerful that they warrant making the players less able to absorb damage (less HP), less able to avoid negative effects (save penalties), or less able to do my darn job (attack/caster level penalties).

It is a good attempt, and I am honestly not sure I could do better. I'd probably charge more in cash for the activation rituals and other such things, and probably tone down the extraneous abilities that I didn't feel needed to be there.

Bruce definitely took an overcomplicated approach to it all, but the money you save can be spent on buying things to offset the penalties.
