Finished it about a day ago, and this in no way needed to be set in the MCU. This felt like an A24 series made by people who don't like or care for superheroes. It's an elitist film bro's wet dream.

That's not to say that it wasn't good, because it WAS, but it just as easily could have been a story set in the "real" world with no connection to the MCU.

Does it matter whether it needed be set in whatever setting it was set? It was set in that setting. Nothing about it needed to be the way it was. It just was, because that’s the show the creators chose to make. It didn’t need to be called Wonderman. The Mona Lisa didn’t need to be a brunette. The Death Star didn’t need to be a sphere. The One Ring didn’t need to be a ring. Aslan didn’t need to be a lion. They just were. Necessity is not a requirement of creativity.

Thats rather the point of the MCU - any story is possible within its shared universe. Its rather elitist to say that Wonder Man doesnt belong

Thanks. It's been a long time. So that would make Justin Hammer a stand-in for Williams. Most of my exposure to Wonder Man was post rebirth, when he was composed of energy.

Tony Stark had a lot of corporate rivals back in the day. Those guys and the Communists were pretty much his rogue's gallery.

And the Mandarin, which was kinda a special case.

Having it in the MCU gave the show as written two big advantages, creatively, over having it as pure standalone.

1) The concept of superheroes is already understood, and no time has to be wasted establishing what superheroes are or how the world would react to them.

2) The Mandarin concept, which was essential to the resolution of the plot, would have seen extremely contrived if we didn't already have a movie establishing the concept.

That's the core strength of a shared universe show; it gives the audience a lot of worldbuilding shorthand, allowing the show creators to focus on plot and characterization.

In that film, he was an unknown actor. In Wonder Man, he is an established film actor whose roles at least partially mirror Kingsley’s own.

How is it possible no one recognized him while he was the Mandarin?

it's a bit different when you're an actor, especially in Hollywood. You'll be exposed to relative unknowns and may well know their work. Then there's the "sunglasses factor." It's truly surprising how many actors, even well known ones, can walk around in public without being recognized.

He is relatively unknown, that isn’t changed. A small part in Coronation Street, some regional theatre. Enough to collect some anecdotes, but not enough to make him recognisable in the US under a shaggy beard.
