I've got a question about doing surveillance. First of all, does anyone know of any type of surveillance gear for 3.5? For example, telescopes, binoculars, etc? I know there's a spyglass, but sometimes, doubling the distance you can see isn't too helpful, it's not going to help you zoom in on what someone is handing someone else from 300 yards, even with a spot check of 40.

Let me put it this way, in order to do surveillance right, you'll want to watch from far away, so as not to be noticed, and you want to be able to zoom in on what's going on if necessary. I already asked my DM if a spyglass could be made masterwork, but I can't manage to explain what I wanted to do to it which would actually necessitate making it masterwork, rather, he can't seem to comprehend it for some reason. Does anyone get what I mean?

Umm, 3.5 is set in a pre Renaissance tech era.

I'm aware of that. But, the spyglass is Renaissance tech, what I'm looking for is what I would suppose would be like a masterwork spyglass.

On another note, binoculars were invented at about the same time as the telescope (which, by the way, predated the spyglass).

Also, don't forget, the spyglass is from the PHB. It's simply a handheld version of it's big brother, the astronomy telescope.

There is no "masterwork" spyglass/telescope. You might want to create one for your game. X3 mag would be appropriate.

Yes, he marketed the modern day binoculars, but the galilean design has been around since the 17th century.

[SIZE=-1]That's right I forgot that the modern prism binocular began with Ignatio Porro in 1854[/SIZE][SIZE=-1] & Hans Lippershey completed a binocular version of his telescope in 1608.
