[World Cup] The world's view of Germany - has it changed?

This is kind of surprising for us, because here, in tourist paradise that is Croatia, some of the "good hosts" would bleed your wallet dry if they thought they could get away with it.

Well, since we Germans are some of the world's most frequent tourists (thanks to an average of five weeks of annual vacation time or so), we know first hand what it is like to be overcharged just to be a foreigner, and we don't like it when other Germans do it, too.

That doesn't mean that some pubs haven't done this anyway, but in general, society frowns on this sort of thing.

My view of Germans hasn't changed. Since I lived there from 1985-1990, I *know* they can party. Gotta go back someday.

Hasn't changes my view at all. I've met some fun and wonderful people from Germany. I would really like to visit the country. Hopefully my work will be sending me there in the next year.

I sure hope that sort of thing is frowned upon. Prices in Germany are high enough as it is. :)

Just the other day, a local radio-station discussed how great the Germans were to not (overly) raise prices of food and lodging. I haven't really paid attention to the whole discussion, so this might not be the case for large cities, but I remember the host saying that a lot of Croats found quality lodging in smaller towns and villages. Some even had signs in Croatian. It made many people pleasantly surprised.

Now I have visions of Basil Fawltic, hotel owner in Dubrovnik, cursing and swearing at his Serbian guests and telling everyone not to mention the war....

Definitely one of the best shows ever. And poor old Basil is just the person for the image. You really made me laugh!

Regards!

I liked Germany and the Germans I knew when I lived there in 1987. I don't see how my opinion would change just because of a sporting event.

I would like to go there and visit, because back in 1987 I was in West Germany and there was still an East Germany. Although I chalk that up to a morbid curiosity about things have changed in history while I've been alive. I find it odd and a little sad that the manufacturing company I subcontract for ships in workers from Russia on temporary VISAs to cover openings in second and third shift, when I grew up during the Cold War's Reagan years that would never have happened.
