What films are you using for the Greek/Roman periods, out of curiosity?

avoid braveheart and the messenger due to the horrorable armour.

A lot of my university friends moan when I mention I use Gladiator, but the key is the spirit of the movie - not the nitty gritty detail. As far as movies go - Gladiator really is not that bad.

I use some other movies to have the students analyze what rings false about a particular clip - so bad (historically speaking) films have their place.

I had some friends who were reenactors come speak to my class once. In general they are way too interested in tiny details and bore kids to death.

How do you use the video clips in your class, pogre? Computer, just a plain old VCR/TV, or some amazing technology I do not know of?

I ask since your profession is my future job, and I wouldn't mind getting a few cool ideas even though I'm still just a college freshman.

Hi Trevalon,

I have observers from the U of I all the time - student teachers too - come on by if you need some observation hours.

As for your question, I use a video capture card to create mpegs and use them in power point presentations.

For medieval mass combat, if you can find it, there's not much better than Alexander Nevsky. It's old, it's B&W, it's in Russian (though it has subtitles), and most of the "battle action" doesn't take place until about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through... but it is a great one, IMO. Shows formations, pikes, cavalry, arrows, shield walls, and why you should not wear plate mail when fighting on ice floes.

I still show my copy to my PCs every once in a while when they ask what a reach weapon could possibly be good for compared to a good old claymore.

You really ought to show some seige warfare, but I can't think of a suitable film.

If you're really doing world history, maybe you could cover some Japanese medieval warfare, which would give an excuse for showing some Kurosawa clips.

ummm - I love those films but,

As many of you know I teach High School World History (really Western Civ, but that's another topic) - I need your help.

I plan on revamping our curriculum after this year - so still a useful suggestion.
