Worldwide D&D Game Day - Sep 19 2009

I can't think of a worse idea to promote D&D.

"Come spend hours arguing with people and finicking over rules to do all the boring grunt work that goes into making an adventure so that someone else can enjoy it!"

Yeah, not enthused.

For the DMG 2 promotion it is a great idea. If you just want to play come about 45 minutes after the slated start time and you can just sit down and play. I find it a little sad you find making an adventure to be boring grunt work. I take it you don't DM much?

So, are you going to participate in the game day?

Sadly, no. My FLGS aren't signed up, and although there's another game store literally at the end of the street, the impression I got there at the last WWDDGD was... not favourable.

(Besides, I don't like going into a store if I have no intention of buying anything, and the truth is that the only reason I even use an FLGS is that I've bought from this guy from some 20 years now. If his store were to close up, I'd start shopping on Amazon, same as I do for most other things. So going to this other store just wouldn't feel right.)

Coincidentally, as happened last WWDDGD, my weekly game has been cancelled, so I'm getting in even less gaming than normal. :( Even so, I really have to make use of the time that's been freed up to wait in for some deliveries. Maybe I'll play some Neverwinter Nights while I wait - that counts, right?

Think I might try to go to this one. None of the stores near me do it, but I'm not at home this weekend, I'm in Cincinnati. Anyone know any good game stores here?

Don't worry about not buying anything at a gameday. Even if you don't you are helping out the store by participating in a public event that helps get curious folks in the door to see what all the fuss is about.

If the gameday is filled with people you wouldn't want to be around thats different.

lol

I know it's not what you mean, but this post comes off kind of sounding like a friend of mine a few years back. This friend more-or-less hated modelling, painting, army construction, and the gameplay of Warhammer FB. And yet he still came out to events all the time. We could never figure out why. Must have been our glowing personalities.

I'll be at The Source in Saint Paul for this one (other stores all have them at times) and we're running three sessions; 10:00 am, 1:00 and 4:00. As this store usually has a big turnout of new players (or new to 4E) they asked us to pre-gen the adventures just in case. I'm pre-gening two, just in case there's a couple of repeat watchers or players.

It's only two encounters and they have the monsters already so it's pretty easy to set up.

Just settled in from the day. We started about noon and had at least five, maybe six tables run. I put together an example adventure in case some players didn't want to create one and two tables took advantage of that.

I expected to run but didn't have to, we had two of the kids at the event run 4e D&D for the first time at a public event. One using my adventure and adding her own cool twists and the other putting one together on the spot. He was a very tough, smart, no-nonsense DM.

Only one table that I know of set out to generate an adventure and they ran through the very adventure they had built. They were a fairly mature group of skilled gamers.

One DM had put together a wholly different adventure using only the included monsters. It took place on a dock and ships of the sea. That looked like a lot of fun.

There were gamers there I'd never met before and at least one other coming back from the 2e days to checkout 4e and the current gaming scene. Though he did not get into a game, I think he left with a new PHB.

A good day, new DM's, new gamers well met, a couple of fun D&D games, some cool swag, and memories with old friends.

I've attached my example that I put together. Uh... please be kind.

This was fun and I'm grateful.
