Worst DM Quotes at Gencon

All Flesh Must be in "THE END"

Me and my wife were in an introductory AFMBE, so of course, the GM started explaining the rules. Well, he did for about two seconds, then started explainging the rules to witchcraft and then about a half hour explaining not only the history, but the gencon rumors about the world called "The End"

Then, after handing us our characters, with little or no background info, he said, "Ok, from here on out, I just moderate dice rolls". No descriptions or anything.

I emailed Eden Studios immediately upon arriving home, and they quickly responded asking for details and said they would adress the problem

Ok, this quote wasn't at a Con ... but still it deserves recognition.

Background is, we used to hang out with this guy, lets call him B. B used be ok to hang around with until he graduated high school and became a royal arse.

Anyway, the game went like this for 2-4 hours:

1) Beginning of game, local cleric cast geas on PCs.
2) PCs travel to cave in mountain.
3) PCs fight 50-60 goblins
4) PCs find 1 million GP diamond
5) PCs carry 1 million GP diamond to town

After the game, he asked what I thought of the game. I didn't want to hurt his feelings, mostly because he didn't take criticisms very well (but I should have anyway, but I digress, I was a stupid kid).

He looks me square in the eye and says:

"Yes, I like to use plot in my games."

Am I the only one who looks forward to playing in cons (someday) so that I actually get to play with these terrible players/DMs? I have a strange fascination with people with social deficiencies.

Nope. I'm going to my first Con (albiet not one of the "Big Three") at the end of this month. My wife & I can't wait. Hopefully there will be a few good players/DM's in the mix though.

I know the mod you are referring to, I can guess with about 99.95% certainty the player you are referring to (and no, I don't play with him voluntarily), and I understand the issues with mod writing. If you are interested in trying again, things have changed, and you may find the administration of the region to be more amenable to your views. Or you may not. I encourage you to at least try, however.
Things are, in my opinion, better than they have ever been. The administration actually listens and responds to the player base, and even (gasp the horror) solicits their opinions voluntarily!
Mostly, I'd like more good gamers in my area (Guelph, for me) that I can play with occasionally. That's the real strength of Living campaigns, in my opinion. People get to bring their characters together, and play with new people.

I think we've actually met, either at Icebreaker or Weekend in Ket (which is where this happened).

I'm positive you know who this guy is. After WiK he was put at my table for teh 2nd part of a 2 rounder at Icebreaker and I had to have him removed. There was no way I was going to play with this guy again. The funny thing is, the only reason he was assigned to our table was because his first group left, and there was at least one other table that refused to play with him. The guy is a legend of sorts.

I'm actually aquaintances (formerly friends, I guess) with the former triad members, and I can honestly say I'm glad they were fired. They stopped working on developing Ket as soon as rules changes started coming down the pipe, but they didn't inform the Circle and as a result no progress was made for months. Now, in their defense, their rude comments towards the Circle regarding the changes apparently resulted in the Circle dismissing Ket mods as inappropriate or completely rewriting them just prior to release for no logical reason which IMO is not a positive course of action from the Circle.

That's all in the past though, I guess. As far as starting up again? I don't know. But based on your advice I'll think about it.

Seule, Acmite,

I bet I know who you're both talking about. Does he always play female characters and have particularily cheesy drawings of each one at least 8x12? I was a judge at the events you mentioned and IIRC whenever he would have these scantily clad monstrosities we would have every NPC shun him as a woman without vitrtue (FYI for folks, we play in Ket, middle eastern flavor. I suppose I could have done worse to him, but there are limits). He went crying to the then triad, but we kept doing it ; )

Still, that's not the worst thing I've seen him do. A buddy of mine at his very first RPGA event in Barrie a couple of years ago played with him. Surprise, the Gamer from hell was playing a slutty female character. ;) At one point he got up, moved around and STARTED GIVING MY BUDDY A MASSAGE AT THE TABLE, IN CHARACTER. He still shudders to this day when we bring it up.

Acmite, I suggest giving Ket a try again. There will be a multi day event in November in Toronto that will have new regionals and some of the previous ones for this year to catch up. I've been judging all of the regional cons and they're VERY well run and the Rigel Group is very responsive. LG has seen some real improvements over year 2, although I agree that the present treasure system sucks. (don't believe the anti-trickle-down hype folks, it sucks.) Also the campaign will go 3.5 compliant by October 1st so if you plan to attend then make sure you've got everything ready.

Our Triad is much better than the previous, at least they're getting mods out there. We're still on the short end for regional rewards and our Metaorgs are HIDEOUSLY overdue with no real communication from the Triad on the matter, but it's an improvement.

Seule, send me an email, I may be able to hook you up with gamers in Guelph/Waterloo. This is Nick btw, I've probably met you guys.

Ah, the first three Archons here in St. Louis I had a blast, they had a long running Find the Rod of Seven Parts adventure that we played every year.

Then they quit that one year and we played a game that had 12th-13th level PC's, and this was 1e mind you, that were kind of silly. I played a Fighter that wore plate mail armor that was painted like a penguin. And we battled smurfs. It was an impossible adventure, since the Smurfs were mega tough and the scenario didn't leave much chance of avoiding confrontation with Papa Smurf who was a high level magic user/cleric. When we were all being slaughtered I tried to jump in a lake and swim away like a penguin since I had the penguin armor. They didn't let me so I died too. That was bad becuase I was ready for the next part of the Rod of Many Parts game and it was a little too silly.

Then we were playing FASA's Star Trek RPG. The judge was using his home campaign stuff. We had a ship with 8 warp engines, triple back up shields, and GENESIS device torpedos. Half the group were the DM's players and the rest were us stunned strangers. So the ship was more powerful than the Klingon fleet and could probably wipe the Borg out in an hour. This was real monte haul ST gaming! We ran into some kind of space ship, and the captain had half the crew beam over while the rest of us sat there and listened to them play. The adventure ran out of time thankfully before we really did ANYTHING beyond make a few skill checks for our sensors. That was the WORST ever.

Then I find out that the Star Trek Tactial Combat simulator game is going to be run by the SAME PERSON!!! He had nothing prepared. He gave us a book of ships and told us to pick one and we would have a team deathmatch. That was bad, he used a ton of house rules, just like in his ST:RPG session, and there was no real plot to the game. It thankfully ended before we could blow up everyone and I've never been back to a con since.

But I'm going to Archon this year and hopefully I'll run into some good DM's. I'll finally get the chance to play 3e, but hopefully they don't just run Living Greyhawk games. I'm really praying that someone is running a 1e or basic game as well.
