WotC ESDs

I've bought 4 Planescape ESDs and I'm very satisfied. The poster maps are broken, but that's what you get for using PDFs. Otherwise, they are wonderful.

Are there restrictions on how/if the ESD's can be copied? If I want to download a bunch of them and burn them to a CD for archiving, will that be possible?

IANAL, but...

Unless I am REALLY gravely mistaken, I believe that regardless of any licensing agreement to the contrary, such an action is completely legal. You may make backup archives of digital material you have purchased (in your case, burning a CD) for your own personal use and protection (in case of hard drive meltdown, etc.). At least, it works that way under U.S. Copyright Law(though the media companies are busting @$$ to change that - but that's another rant).

Note that you may NOT lend these CDs to a friend - but it is generally accepted that creating a copy for archival purposes is a completely legitimate act, protected by the "fair use" doctrine.

That was my general impression of things as well, but I thought I remembered reading something about copy protection on the PDFs. Some sort of way of enwrapping the file in an executable that could only be opened once or something. Looking at the website now, it looks like you can download purchased files again so long as you provide your CC # again, so you don't need to worry about losing these files in a hard drive crash.

maps, etc...

Why didn't they just scan the poster maps or any map that is larger than 8.5x11 as a picture file (e.g., JPG, GIF, etc.)?
When was the last time you saw a scanner that big. Not trying to put you down, but to give everybody something to think about. Believe me it is impossible to find anyone with a scanner that big, I have trying for years.

Well if you weren't sure you'd like the whole digital product thing, check out some of the free ESDs on WotC's site. I think they should still be up. Most of them are Realms-specific, but it would give you a pretty good idea of whether or not you'd rather have a paper product or could deal with the PDF file. For the price, I'd say they're a steal--at least if you WANT the product in question, and are willing to print it all out in order to use it.

(Some) Planescape ESDs are hard to read

I found that (some of) the ESDs are of poor quality. In my case, the products I bought (Planescape CS and Tales ftIS - from SVGames) have very low contrast (in the graphical/optical sense, text vs. background). The guy who did the scanning did a poor job.

Text-only version should really be included - always!

Please read my post on Monte Cook's messageboard.

It's great that ESDs are available for a low cost, but if you can hardly read the products, then what's the point in buying them?
