I wonder what their "four color" products will look like? They've only done full color or black-n-white up 'til now for 3E.
At least when I work with printers in my job, "four color" means "full color."

Most of the covers look great. MM3 looks to me like a drawing of the intended cover rather than a cover itself, and Wizards is known for posting not-quite-complete art over in their library.

As someone interested in Eberron, I actually like the full-color covers better than the black-and-white ones we've seen previously. In each case, the image is actually cut up, so a big W.A.R. painting has been turned into three zoomed-in triangular sections. My instinct would usually be to just use the full painting as the cover, but I think the look they've created is pretty cool and fits the "mock tome" idea. Plus, that way they can use the full images for DM screens. :)

Four color printing is the method used in most periodicals (comics, magazines, etc.) and things like posters and calendars. In this process, four colored inks (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) are used in specific ratios to replicate a full range of color. Assuming that's what WotC is talking about, there shouldn't be any reall change in quality.

That said, I have no idea how most books are printed. I had assumed they always used a similar process, but apparently not. Do any of the d20 publishers have experience working with printers that they can share?

The four colors in question will be Brown, Maroon, Beige and Tan.

As for you MMIII-cover nay-sayers,

I disagree, I think that looks neat. Fossils and stuff.

I don't know of any other printing process than CMYK. You could print with less colors (duplex) or you could even add color (gold for instance), but I can't think of any difference between "color printing" and "four-color printing"...

Wow

I made the front page. I feel famous. :o All this while I was waiting for my laundry to finish drying in the wee hours of the morning.

I agree with the earlier post that the MM III looks like a mock-up. It's the same .gif used in the GAMA presentation photos at GamingReport.com. So, I'm still hopeful it will improve. Libris Mortis is in the "wait and see up close" category for me. I like the border style of Frostburn a lot. The rest look great to me.

I worried about four-color too. But I'm gonna go with what sounds like professional info above that that actually means full color.
