WotC GenCon Announcement: A New Campaign Setting?

So I was talking to a friend of mine who lives in California yesterday and he said he was playtesting a new campaign setiing for WotC. So I remembered that Wizards was going to make an announcement at GenCon and I thought that it might be possible that the announcement would herald a new campaign setting. My friend could not give me any details as per the NDA he signed. Oh well, this is just speculation on my part.

Seems odd, doesn't it? Eberron so new, and all. Even if Eberron was not selling well, would WotC already have another setting ready to go? Unless this is a setting for one of the offsprings -- d20 modern or future (surely not past).

Highly - h-i-g-h-l-y - unlikely. Besides, there's a lot of so-called playtesters out there who just get off on starting rumors.

Wasn't splitting there customer base, by having so many different campaign settings, one of the reasons TSR went under and what the folk originally in charge at WotC said they would not do?

Hence I find it unlikely...

Of course the folks who were original in charge when WotC took over TSR, arn't in charge anymore and the money people might have seen the money made selling the Eberron core book and thought... "Hey we need to do that again!".

So while unlikely it could be possible, although stupid...

There was a note yesterday that the Sept-Dec catalog includes d20 Horror and d20 Cyberspace. They may simply be referring to that.

Yeah, I'd doubt they're throwing out yet another full setting with Eberron so new. Perhaps, though, they will consider putting out a book of mini-settings. Or, maybe they were just playtesting the world-creation rules from the DMG 2.

Of course endless 'splatbooks' is also cited as one of the 'great mistakes' of TSR during the 2e era.

And yet WotC is releasing a 'Complete Munchkin', 'Races of Dullness', 'Sandburn', 'Book of Exalted Vileness', and whatnot, every month or so.

So I would not rule out another campaign setting. :\

As Marx (sorta) once said: "The first time something happens in history, it is a tragedy; the second time, farce." (I say 'sorta said' because I don't have the exact quote here -- but that's the gist of it.)

Must you do this in every single thread?
