WotC releases for March 2007: Cormyr, Magic Items, Star Wars RPG

New domains then.....

I'm pretty sure they're all reprints as well (although maybe modified). Once you look at Frostburn, Sandstorm, Planar Handbook, the FR books, etc. you realise there's been a lot of work done on new domains over the years.

Cheers!

Actually, the SC contained no new spells. However, it did demonstrate just how many spells you'd missed in previous sources...

It did, however, pull a bunch from the website and Dragon magazine. Those are a source that a lot of people don't consider "official" (seen in comments in the "What do you use from Dragon?" thread).

Very nice. I'm really happy that they're re-releasing Star Wars, and since I really liked the Spell Compendium, Magic Item Compendium will be right down my alley as well. Sweeeeet.

Looks interesting... I just pray to all the gods that the "Saga Edition" part of the name in the new SW RPG doesn't mean that god-awful card based RPG TSR pulled on Dragonlance. Saga killed my Dragonlance :(

I doubt they'll go that route. Everyone (or at least Hollywood ad copy writers) refers to the "Star Wars saga" when talking about the movies and that universe; I'd place a wager that that's what the word here means.

The phrase "Star Wars Saga" is a popular phrase used by Lucasfilm to refer to the whole of Star Wars. There are about 1.4 million google hits for the phrase, and a little googling shows that many Star Wars games of various types have been re-released as a new "Saga Edition" after Episode III to reflect that they now encompasses the whole of Episodes I through VI (Star Wars Chess: Saga Edition, Star Wars Monopoly: Saga Edition, Trivial Pursuit Star Wars: Saga Edition), so it's probably a Lucasfilm marketing strategy with the name to tie it to other Star Wars products, and by unfortunate coincidence just happens to sound similar to a failed gaming system from almost a decade ago.

The early word through the grapevine (some message board posts here and at wizards.com from the authors and people who have been in on it, saying what they can through NDA's) is that the "Saga Edition" is essentially a reprint of the Revised Core Rules with errata, maybe a few tweaks and some minor rules changes to reflect things from Episode III, and probably some info on more eras, so no big changes.

I'm guessing that they will be using the new magic item format in the upcoming Compendium, so I will probably have to look at it like the next Monster Manual IV. Too damn much fluff! Three-thirds of a book taken up by item background that isn't needed or that I could come up with myself is a little too much, in my opinion.

A lot of people are assuming that the MIC will be organized in the same way as the Spell Compendium... removal of setting specific elements...

I did, and may yet, consider buying the MIC simply because I haven't purchased a majority of WotC books in the last few years so I wouldn't be paying for things I already had in other books.

However if they strip them all of setting specific elements, that's going to be a major hit against it. The last thing I need is them stripping flavor from all too frequently too generic things.

According to Rich Baker the book uses a new, never before seen format.

Flashcards?

Edit: In seriousness, I vaguely remember something from a few months back where Rich (IIRC) talked about coming up with a new layout for modules that's supposed to be much more "user-friendly". I don't recall the details, but it seems like they were going to do photos (or high-end art) for each room/area separately with boxes around the edges of the page pointing at the different things.

The mock-up art didn't thrill me, but my impression of where they were going was that it'd either be really cool and useful or it'd be a real turn off. I could see it either feeling like it was just a series of DDM senarios or like I was GMing a bunch of paint-by-numbers. Personally, I'm glad they're trying some new things. Even though I don't care for FR, I'll thumb through a "new fangled" module to see what I think of it.

Disclaimer: I really don't know if this new module follows the format I'm thinking of. Just conjecture based on something I only marginally remember.
