D&D (2024) WotC should have stuck to it's guns with the 2024 Beyond Update

Pls tell me more about this. I've been debating biting the bullet and paying a sub to access Maps. I wasn't impressed when I tried Maps on a trial basis in September.
There's a thread D&D (2024) - DDB Maps now integrates the combat tracker

I only played with it a little bit but you just drop the appropriate monster icon and it adds the monster to the encounter. Then you can get all the details with a click without going to DDB.

@OB1 @Clint_L @UngeheuerLich @Oofta There are toggles for the 2014 content. Have you guys not noticed them?

If you look at the Home tab in the character builder, there is a toggle for “2014 core rules” (along with homebrew, expanded rules, and legacy rules). You can just turn them off entirely with this.

If you leave them on, you can still filter spells by 2024 core rules, 2014 core rules, expanded rules, and homebrew. These filters are available via both the spell selection section of the Class tab in the character builder and the Manage Spells sidebar on the character sheet.

Good to point out, but that's only for character creation. I want one that does it for everything I do. Have it default in the character build as well, but every time I do a search or basically everything other than character creation it's still a pain. Ideally I'd have a "If I have a newer version use that" toggle for everything.

Yes, that would be nice. It would also be nice if we could filter player access to specific content. For instance, I own the Acq Inc book but can’t stop my players from choosing its content without turning off all expanded rules content.

Rant/ Had an otherwise fantastic session last night that was marred by WotC's caving to a small but loud segment of the fanbase who pushed back on the original plan for DDB as the 24 rules came online (and I have a feeling that a majority of those voices don't even use DDB anyhow). I'm a HEAVY Beyond user in the games I run, and I really wish they had gone ahead with their original plan to keep the old rules available for reference but default the interface to the new rules (even though my current campaign has a mix of 14 and 24 PCs). While you can manually turn off different pieces (every single time you look something up) my players (especially the Wizard) is struggling sorting through all of the duplicate spells. Hopefully WotC will be able to add some more tools to allow the DM to turn levers on and off regarding what players sharing the DM purchases can and can't see, ideally at the campaign level. Right now it is just a complete mess. /endRant

On the flip side, the latest update to Maps is freaking incredible. Throwing monsters onto the board, starting and running a combat has never been easier. I had been using the old Encounter tracker until I accidently discovered the new option half way through last night's session and it's a game changer.

As someone who plays with both sets of rules, I am glad they kept both.

We haven't really run into any problems as the old things that were replaced or duplicated are clearly labeled "legacy".

On the flip side I would be pretty pissed off if the books I paid for on DND Beyond were no longer available to build things with in the interface. I can see turning off new purchaces, but taking away something someone already purchased is not ok IMO.

So, if I understand correctly, it wasn't a mistake to keep the 2014 rules accessible as they are, the problem is that both they and the 2024 rules intrude on each other. It would be better if there was a toggle where one could allow only the 2014 rules, the 2024 rules, or both if one desired.

Is that correct, as per what I'm reading in the thread?

PS: Though people may think it should be simple to do, I hear from some (not here) that this is not such an easy thing to implement as it sounds. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be done though.

No.

A lot of groups have not switched to 2024 rules. My group has not and I have no intention to at this stage. I have purchased the 5.5 books and I do not like it. I am a legendary bundle person on Beyond. Their original plan would have made Beyond unusable when the main reason I use the site is for the character builder and other tools. I paid to have the content usable in the tools and I am very happy they maintained it.

It is very easy to see the Legacy tag in the tool and ignore it if you are using 5.5.

I'm not. At all. It just adds confusion and I agree that more toggles are needed. For the sake of a few minor rules differences, it doubles up almost every entry and is just generally a mess. I agree 100% with the OP: for the sake of caving to a few loud voices, some of whom, let's face it, resist any change, the interface has gotten ridiculously muddled.

It should have used the current rules as the standard and added toggles so those who want some or all of the old stuff can go through and toggle what they need on, rather than expecting everyone to wade through all the redundancies.
Their original plan would have be awful.

Sure, they should have a simple toggle that allows you to choose which rule set you want. The bad database design is their own fault.
