WotC's Electronic Thingy

My biggest fear with the whole "EI" is that they will start altering rules via electronic media, making it canon and that those that do not subscribe get left in the lurch. While this is fine for homebrews and home games, this would make convention gaming a pain in the butt. I have visions of Referees lording over tables via M:tG and DDM vice running real campaigns and mods. Of course we are talking years of progression, but any step in that direction just makes me very leary of the future of the granddaddy of all RPGs.

Maybe I'm overreacting. Dear God I hope that I am, but WotC has never really understood that you can't run D&D like Magic and the longer the suits at Hasbro control the product flow, the farther WotC gets away from the original TSR mentality (pre-Blume era, of course)

Thunder,

I think you are over-reacting a tad about them changing rules online, but you might be right about them looking for ways to screw more pennies/bleed more money out of us anyway they can.

I am eagerly awaiting to see how this e-zine can fill the void left behind by Dragon and Dungeon's absence. Unlike the many posters here in the other threads boycotting not only the e-zine, but WOTC itself, it goes to show they're not true D&D fans at all. Just people who want to hold a D&D magazine in their hands.

Apparently, they're in love with the idea of a D&D magazine, not D&D itself. Not me. I am looking forward to this e-zine, as much as I'd hate to see Dragon/Dungeon go. It's all we have left that's OFFICIAL content so let's wait and see what it has to offer.

Razz,

Since when have you and MerricB been drinking the Kool-aid? *is just trying to be funny*

Hey if it works Razz, that's fine. But me, based on experience, I just don't see this working.

No I'm not a "fan boi" of D&D I'm a selective customer that purchases their products as suits my needs and desires. Not agreeing with their decision and voting with my dollar is exactly how a customer is heard. I don't want to just "hold a D&D magazine in my hand" I want to purchase a periodical that caters to the hobby I enjoy, and read it. Besides when did "real fan of D&D" start equating to "take whatever WotC decides and like it"?

One thing I know is that it is probably a "subscription" service and it's an e-zine.

I enjoyed my ability to go into Borders, flip through an issue of Dungeon or Dragon, and decide whether to purchase that issue or not.

I enjoyed being able to cop the magazine and enjoy it on the bus ride home from work.

This wasn't because I liked D&D, it was because everyone on the bus just thought I was soooo kewl for reading a magazine called Dungeon or Dragon(Just so you know that was sarcasm.)

I know that the service WotC is offering won't allow me to do either of these, so yeah I have decided it's probably not going to be for me. Then again maybe I'm just not a "real" fan.

You're right, I am sounding like MerricB with all this. Heh. :D (no offense intended, MerricB)

I have little faith that this e-zine will work, but I still have faith that it will at some point. I'd rather get what material they are offering than no material at all, which is what I'd be getting if I joined the picket lines forming on these forums.

"If life hands you lemons, make lemonade"

Not "If life hands you lemons, smash it and squeeze the juice in life's eye and hope it gives you something better in return"

Who knows, though, maybe I am wrong and WotC will realize their mistake and re-publish Dragon and Dungeon again. Or, worse, WotC gets dropped by Hasbro completely because of all the loss of customers (which in turn leads to loss of revenue).

I'm holding out here. I couldn't stand the other thread. The people their sounded like they lost their child, and that's going just a bit too far for a hobby. Seriously. :\

I have heard this reason over and over in the other threads. So what it sounds like, to me anyways, is that Dragon's appeal to readers was more of convenience and materialism and not the actual content within?

Heck, if that's all it took to make a great magazine, maybe I should start my own. /sarcasm

Like I said previously, I'm going to give the e-zine a chance. If it's material is at least equal to what Dragon/Dungeon were offering, than it looks like I'll be enjoying what everyone wants back but are too busy boycotting it. If not, then I'll have a reason to be angry and throw a fit like everyone else.
