Would I buy a new, original campaign setting?

  • Definetly. I will even use the whole setting for my own games!

I'm not sure about everyone else but my group tends to be large and nebulous. If it isn't one of the primary high-visibility settings we'd never get enough folks behind things to run a new setting. They don't all want to shell out the $30-100 on the core books or material for the new setting.

We do have folks (like me) who buy things, mostly to use in other games we run. In general though we run a limited list of (D&D) games over time comprised mostly of:
- Greyhawk (including return-to modules) - this is by far the most frequent setting we use.
- Forgotten Realms
- 2 Primary home-brew campaigns - extensive, been around for years kinds of campaigns
- One-off or short campaigns - these tend to either be something someone threw together or a cool idea they want to explore or maybe a handful of people bought the same off the shelf product and want to play for a bit
- We've tried the "less popular" settings Ravenloft, Planescape, AlQudim, etc. but only in passing and for short campaigns or excursions

Beyond that, we don't go in for alot of variation. Mostly things get bought and re-used in GH, FR or a home-brew.

I will say that at any point in time there were (are?) usually non-typical games going on, and now some of these (chiefly Cthulhu and L5R) have moved to a D20 mold. We do still crank out Stormbringer, WHFRP, Vampire:TheMasquerade and Shadowrun quite a bit - although nothing like in years past (these are the years of the D20 systems). In general though, we stick with D&D (Greyhawk) since it is a standard that everyone knows and loves.

Well, thanks to all the people that voted and posted their opinions. This thread was just to see what the public may think about campaign settings not published by WoTC or other "big" companies. I said that I would post a few concepts here but I changed my mind; I'd rather keep them unrevealed.

What Mistwell said is true. But keep in mind that many unrecognized authors out there have talent equal or better than known authors. Many of us are like this and of course, this talent is not wasted if one put efforts for publishing it and sharing it with the community.

If your guessing what I'm planning, well, all I have to say is that I'm working on such campaign setting, thinking to publish it in the future (believe me, I have a way for doing so). For now, a long road awaits ahead.

Until that, I'm thinking to run an online campaign to test the concepts of the world but that would be in a couple of months. Anyone interested in playing could mail me at yamirpr@hotmail.com but like I said, you will have to wait a while.

Eh... I don't know. I never, ever buy campaign settings. I just don't have the time to run multiple campaigns. However, I may buy the contest winner if it is original enough, simply because WotC did a wonderful thing and deserve a reward.

Hey, if I win, you guys buy my setting ok? :D
