Would you pay for storyhour updates?

First off, let me preface this whole thing by stating that I have absolutely no intention of doing this. I am just curious to see how deep people's committment to their favorite storyhours go.

So, let's say Destan or Sep (or whoever is your favorite) offered updates of their stroyhour in PDF form for a reasonable price, like $1.00. Would you pay to read them?

What criteria would you demand? Weekly updates? Professional editing?

Or, would you consider it in bad taste, a breach of the storyhour code if you will.

Personally, I am usually very leery of vanity press, but if someone with serious talent, like Destan for instance, were to do what I outlined above, I would consider paying for it.

Thoughts? Opinions?

My apologies if this has been brought up before.

As an addition to a currently existing, updating story hour, like a PDF compilation once the whole thing's over... I might consider paying for.

Otherwise, I definately wouldn't do it.

Demiurge out.

I do regularly pay for fantasy fiction, so I might well pay for a storyhour of sufficient quality. But it'd probably have to be professional-quality writing to compete for my fiction-entertainment dollar.

...

I don't think that's a question that needs asking; the answer is already out there in the writing world. Some portion of people are quite happy to pay for access to interesting content, and there are a number of business models that work. It's not really all that different from any webcomic that sells PDF enhancements or hardcopy books in addition to what is freely available.

Putting up a donation bucket is probably fairly effective as well, if the quality is there.

I've thought through a number of these sorts of plans - but let's face it, if the goal is to make money, I wouldn't be spending my valuable time writing.

I think that would take half the fun out of it. Now, maybe paying for something like a physical or PDF novelization would be cool. Donating too.

Sounds mercenary to me, BD.

Given how much WotC IP the overwhelming majority of story hours use, I'd say that there are considerable legal hurdles to the idea, leaving aside the reluctance that you see in most posts here. Even generic settings like Sepulchrave's Wyre are obviously D&D stories, and use tons of copyrighted things like spell names, monster names, and the like. I am not an attorney but I don't think that the OGL would cover this if people were to try to sell story updates. This is one reason why I've always turned down offers to reimburse me for the time and effort I've spent writing for my fans here. I take my payment in fan posts and feedback. :)

If someone came up with a way to monetize the Story Hour forum, you could bet that WotC's lawyers would be on top of that like bees on flowers.
