Okay but then for the first adventure you are as much use as a level 2 commoner. That's still going to be great fun. You'd be more use to the party if you stayed in the pub while they fetched it back for you, at least that way they wouldn't need to babysitting you.

Depends if the DM let you have spell prepared memorized (i.e., you didn't have the bright idea of casting all your spells while you were doing whatever made you lose your spellbook).

i used this yesterday on JoeBlank in our OD&D(1974) campaign.

setup:

pool of magic.

previous PCs know that inserting items of magic and value into the pool will cause the pool to grow in power. that power can be harnessed/focused to cause things to happen.

along comes JoeBlank's PC. he has a wide variety of items of magic. he wishes to "sacrifice" several of these items to the pool along with a newly acquired spellbook with several spells inside.

saving throw vs magic is called for. JoeBlank willing fails. so that the change can take place.

he wants to become more statesman like, glib of tongue, refined, persuasive...


referee: roll d4.
JoeBlank: rolls a 2
referee: roll another d4.
JoeBlank: rolls a 4.

Because the difference between having a level 2 wizard's spell repotoire and not requires babysitting. Play the character. Youre a great and powerful wizard (or will be one day) and you need your spellbook back. Are you going to cry in your cups or figure out what happened to it? Or do all level 2 wizards have the backbone of commoners too?

I want to play that now. Sounds like fun, and if the DM tells me it's for story, and not for random gimping, well story is always good. Gimme the d4!

I'd happily roll that D4 - and probably then regret it, but hey...

In fact if it was a bigger table with more options - good, bad, unbalanced and balanced I'd probably quite happily roll a D8, D20 or a D% for that matter.

I'd then probably spend the rest of the session bitching about it, but hey....
