Wraith Recon - has anyone got it?

Any thoughts about it? I am not necessarily looking for a full review, but some thoughts and/or explanation of what is in it would be nice.

Cheers

If you like military scenarios at all... Get. This. Book.

Seriously, it's great. Not having it in frount of me I'm fuzzy on details, but basically it is set in a world with 2 or 3 large continents and several large islands. Sections cover the world history, religions, and major political powers. The most detailed being the Dadariic(?) the country that employs the Wrath Recon forces. It is, of course, the dominant force of the world, no other single country would stand a chance against it's military might, but vs. the world, things would get hairy.

Most of the details of Wrath Recon, and it's over seing SpellCom are covered. A chapter covers the structure of the military; Ground forces, Naval and yes, even a pegesus/griffon mounted Air Force.

The Wrath Recon itself is a top secret force that carries out infiltration, assasination, spying, etc. The feel is very much similar to TVs 'The Unit'.

I love this book and will be running a campaign set in it at some point in the (hopefully near) future.

It does sound interesting. Is it mostly fluff, or mostly crunch? And how is the crunch balanced with the rest of the game?

Mostly setting fluff. No new races, classes or Paragon paths. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any new feats or anything. (There may be some, but my short term memory sucks. ;) ) There are a series of four or so adventures at the back to provide a launching point for a campaign, but I haven't read them yet so...

More impressions please - I'm seriously considering picking it up. How's the print quality? Art?

Print quality is great. It's hard bound and well put together. A very solid book. Honestly, a little shorter than I would like, but that's really the only bad thing I found about it. I'm sure you've seen the cover art, very slick. Interior art is all B&W, but good quality. The world map that is inside both back and front covers IS color, that was a very nice touch. Hmmm... maps, the interior maps of the specific regions aren't 'great'. They are drawn to look like battle or recon maps. Like something out of a mission file. Very nice flavorwise, but I would have liked them a little larger and less 'cluttered' with stamps and such.

Another interesting thing is the de-emphasis on the latter half of 'Killing monsters and taking thier stuff'. SpellCom keeps the Wraiths very well equipped. so in missions where speed is a factor PCs shouldn't feel as if they are being rushed and missing any treasure. In fact, I get the distinct impression that other than grabbing basic money pouches and of course looting the BBEG's. Treasure will be very unneeded, in fact gathering it may be detrimental in some ways. (Again, I haven't read the adventures yet, this is just the impressikon I have from reading the setting chapters.)

Darkwolf-

I was toying with the idea of doing some Star Frontiers conversions with a mix of D&D4e and d20 Modern/d20 Future, but realize that Wraith Recon could save me a lot of effort so was thinking about picking it up. I am surprised that there are no new races or classes though-- how do the D&D4e classes convert into modern terms? You do not have to throw out too many spoliers or whatever-- just give us a sense of it. Are the various Fighter Exploits reskinned in technology terms, for instance? If not, how do they reconcile military guns with medieval swords?

I was under the impression it wasn't a modern setting, but a diffrent twist on fantasy, did I miss something?

VictorC is correct. It's not a modern conversion. It is a 4e D&D setting.

Magic crossbows, spells, dracoliches, etc.

That said it is, as mentioned, mostly fluff. Some of the material, particularly the military make-up may be useful to you.
