Writing an Article - Who else uses tarot cards for creating games?

Angelsboi

First Post
There is a new online zine coming out and my article is on using tarot cards and such when creating adventures. Whoever uses this method, can you all give me some feedback on this style of adventure creating?

I use this style all the time.

I use the entrails of goats and chickens. Does that count?

I find some really good correlations between their arrangements and the way the campaign should be arranged. Anyone else have luck with this?

In Castle Falkenstein's Comme Il faux. there is a system using ordinairy playing cards or Tarrot card to create adventures. Works well for the over romantic style Falkenstein should be played in. It might work for other games as well.

Heh. This is kind of like one of things like, at a party, someone says, "come on, it's not like you've never had sex with your cousin", and everyone just stops and stares, and the guy just acts all dumbfounded like he's the _only_ guy that's ever had sex with his cousin. ;)

So, Angelsboi comes in and says, "come on, who else uses Tarot cards to write modules", and everyone just kind of stops and stares... :)

Ok, so it's nothing like having sex with your cousin (come on, everyone's done that.. don't look at me that way....) but it's using Tarot cards for writing games isn't something I've ever even heard of, let alone done.

It does sound interesting though. The Tarot card, thing, that is. Not the cousin thing...

I would be very interested to see how this would work. Heck, I'll even give it a whirl once or twice and see how it goes. Are their any web sites you could point me at?

Whats worse, your analogy or that I understand it?

Heck, I've done it to come up with ideas. Haven't used 'em yet though.

The basic idea is that you lay out a spread of cards, and use them for inspiration. Perhaps the Queen of Cups is a powerful figure in your campaign, a corporate exec or something. So on...

I've never tried this for writing games but I've thought a lot about trying it out to generate random plots for stories. When I was doing the necessary research IIRC the larger decks (like the Minchiate Etruria deck) seemed the most promising.

The cool thing about this is it wouldn't be like generating an adventure with dice, since the particular relations of the cards to each other would be as important as the actual cards themselves, and most of the story would come out of your interpretation. The cards (and the different spreads) would really just be an aid, a source of suitably cryptic inspiration, almost like self-induced automatic writing.

erm...

Me.

But about all I do is rough out my ideas and then do a reading on how this idea will pan out generally. I'm considering the concept of doing readings "for" NPCs, but I'm not yet convinced thats either worthwhile or plausible...

But there you go, there are two of us with this idea :)
