LARPing

There's nothing wrong with LARPing. I'm 21 years old, and have been playing D&D since age 6. When I hit high school I got into two things at once: Vampire: The Masquerade and drama. Thus, the combination eventually led me to LARPing.

Too many people bash LARPing without every experiencing a real LARP. Here in San Diego, we had a LARP called Puppets and Strings. The game lasted almost two years, with power switching hands (in character only) several times.

LARPing is mainly about social interaction, and D&D gamers aren't known for their social skills.

D&D gamers are the chess club of the world.
LARPers are the drama kids.

[Edit: In fact, I'm such a LARPer that I'm starting a new LARP in San Diego.]

Been there done that

This thread AGAIN? Geezus... I (along with a bazillion other folks) already made my views on LARPs clear in another thread, so, if anyone truly cares, go look for it. The next poll someone makes should be: "Does anyone really give a damn or have the energy to enter into the psycho-masturbatory fury of another thread about what aspect of gaming is sick and wrong?" And the choices should be: "No.", "Not really.", and "Hell no!"

It's a fringe hobby that appeals to fringe people. Roleplaying of any sort is a lot more forgiving to people who feel they don't fit in elsewhere than many other hobbies. It's the flypaper for freaks, man. And here we all are. Whee.

Never done it. Looks boring as silly as all get out.

I'd give it a try, though. That way, I'd know if I was right.

LARPing is, IMO, quite a lot geekier than Table-top gaming. That's why I want to play in one. I need LARPing for my Geek CV.

No. You comport yourself with honor. Go now and walk the earth. There are yet gamers out there who question the use of the d12. They need your aid.

Damn! The poll question doesn't allow for my response. All the LARPers I have met are people who seem to exhibit pride in being the coolest gamers in town (a very strange distinction to shoot for, I know). And they actually are way cooler than me or any of the other gamers I personally know; they have more sex than any other gamers I know, more fashion sense, you name it -- they are all closer in virtually every way to maintream society's criteria for coolness.

I suspect, though, based on the poll question that this is not typical.

Man...that is an awesome quote!

Add my opinion to Mourn's

I'm going with Suzi...different tree, same branch.

As for LARP'ing, I will just say, that my experiences in large, convention LARP's are among the best gaming experiences of my entire life.

Not always the best run games (but usually pretty good) but among the best experiences.

LARPers are indeed geekier that TTRPers. And I am jealous.

Out of curiosity, and maybe to help my self esteem: Who do you roll your eyes at more, LARPers or performance art majors? :)

Oh, and Mourn: I'm a mite intrigued by the San Diego LARP... Never played before, but have a sort of passing interest... What system, theme you using, and where in the SD area are you?
