XP and PCs gaining Templates

Help!

When a pc gains a template, what happens to their XP total?

Specific situation: Wizard gets a phylactery and jumps up from 12 to 16 when he becomes a lich.

Does the wizard 's xp shoot up with the template or is his total static?

His total XP doesn't change.

Though I make use of Template Classes (a template broken down into levels equal to the LA that are taken at each new level gained instead of another class level) so the progression can be gradual rather than a sudden jump like that.

Unspecified in RAW -> DM call.

Here's a conundrum for you, though:

If on gaining a template you don't get the XP, what happens if you thereafter lose a level (due to a failed fort save vs. a negative level, or from Reincarnate/Raise Dead/Ressurection)? RAW, you're set to halfway up from the level it put you at... so if you're 7th level Fighter and become an afflicted Lycanthrope by way of a werebear (CR 5), you gain 6 racial HD and a +2 level adjustment (ECL 15 with your levels in Fighter). If you later are Raised from the dead via Raise Dead, you lose a level (to ECL 14), and... are set to halfway between ECL 14 and 15 on your experience regardless of your previous XP total.

Nifty, huh?

One simple option might be to say that he is fixed at his current level, and continues gaining xps, but only when he gets enough xps to reach the 17th level threshold does he actually advance to his next level (13th level in this case).

Cheers

In that case, what level would you use for determining how much XP a character gets for a certain CR?

For a CR 13, would the character get 3900 or 1600 xp?

I'm curious: Why would anyone think the PC's Experience Points have changed with the application of a template?

That's just bizarre: is there any reason to assume XP are increased? Is there any template/spell/magic that does so? (Barring the Deck of Many Things, of course!) XP is never increased via a template!

The PC now has an LA. That LA precludes him/her/it from gaining a level for awhile. That's the price he pays for extra power.

The PC is now a level 16 PC (ECL 16). He gains XP according to his level, just like everyone else.

Agreed, it is just like taking a race with high LA, except the LA is being applied mid-campaign instead of at character creation.

ok, thanks all... I was just doing the calculations and it seemed off. My email to the group was:

"Guy with the template, you got # xp and progressed 2% towards level 17."
"Everyone else, you got # xp and progressed 17.3% towards level 13."

I mean... it looks bad on paper, fits the rules... but yeah.
