XP cost for Item creation

As previous poster said, they're guidelines, not rules. When the DM invents new items they're first supposed to compare to an existing item. Only if that is fruitless should the table be used to get a base estimation.

My fault, I should have been more careful in my post. I merely added that page reference as an extra resource for the original poster; I wasn't trying to disagree/argue with any of the other posts. Sorry for the confusion.

One Additional question:

I'm creating this as an NPC who is a Fighter 2/Artificer 5/ Warforged Jugernaut 5. He has the artisan feat which decreases the gold cost for items, so at 12th level he has 88k gold. Additionally, however, I'm wondering how much in the way of starting equipment he should start with. I'm under the impression that if he created these items (which is cheaper than buying them) I should be calculating his possessions as if he made them (assuming he's capable of doing so). Am I correct? Or should I be basing the equipment cost off of the market price? Any answers again appreciated.

For me it would depend on what assumptions I would want to make as DM about the xp's. IE is this his level after he made his own items? If you have no problem with that little question then I know of no reason not to assume he has made his own items all along.

For a scroll, the Base Price is Caster Level * Spell level * 25. For potions, it's *50, and for a wand it's *750.

After you have the base price, you can figure out some more relevant costs:

Cost to create: Base price/2 + special components (e.g. 100 gp for identify on account of the pearl).
XP cost: Base Price/25 + special XP costs (e.g. 300 XP for a scroll of limited wish).
Time taken: Base Price/1,000 days.

For wands, multiply the special component costs and XP costs by 50 (for 50 charges).

Market Price: Base Price + special components + special XP costs*5 gp.

I find creation of scrolls and potions to be easy. I look at their list price, divide by 2 (creation cost) then divide that by 25 to get the xp cost.

Uh, no.

The XP cost is a 25th of the base price, not a 25th of the materials cost.

A scroll of a 2nd level spell, made at caster level 3, has a base price of 150gp (2 x 3 x 25).

The cost to create it is 150/2 gp (75), and 150/25 xp (6)... not 150/2/25.

I believe you are right, but I think I nixed that because I thought it was stupid to have a item maker pay xp's for the market price mark up. Which is all that difference is.

Well, fair enough.

Reword it as "and xp equal to the materials cost (in gp) divided by 12.5".

Now it's not based on the market price at all!
