XP distribution to cohorts of cohorts!

quote DM's Guide pg 147 "Cohorts are followers, not leaders." I think this is rather clear about the role of cohorts with regard to Leadership.

One could argue that is flavor text and not mechanics.

"Leadership" is arguably a mislabelled feat. Frex, it doesn't directly give any bonuses in mass combat where the common usage of "leadership" would be extremely valuable. The feat we have in the DMG could just as accurately be labelled Friendly, Very Social, or Loyalty. Leadership just sounds better.

IMO, 25% xp for the cohort of the cohort.

Most lords of castles and countries won't have the entirety of those who take orders form him be FOLLOWERS or COHORTS, though. That's what hirelings are for.

Very true.

The Leadership feat would represent effort on the part of the character to bring a number of particularly enthusiastic and loyal people into their fold, and treat them well, too. It is extremely useful to have a few absolutely loyal underlings when you are running a kingdom.

A Cohort is a personal bodyguard or servant. They don't have a real say in how the adventure goes, they're just their to assist their leader. It says so in the "Cohort" section of the DMG.

Once the Cohort takes the Leadership feat, this doesn't really seem to apply any more. So, he should be moved to an NPC status, and the PC should find a new Cohort of his own.

And, so long as you treated them well, former cohorts woudl make still greate lieutenants in a "multi-tiered organisation" ... including kingdoms.

Not 100% reliable anymore, since they're not "under your thumb" as it were ... but a darned sight more trustworthy than some schluboff hte street, eh?

Yeah, I mean who exactly would ROBIN have to kick around and fetch the Bat Remote for him?

Nobody, that's who! They'd think.. why am I working for -you- ... you're just Batman's Toady. I mean without Batman there to make you coolish, you'd just be some schmoe.. I should work for Batman, not Billy Secondstring here.

Old School [FR] Example of multi-tiered Leadership:

Leader: Manshoon, Leader of the Zhentarim
Cohort: Sememmon, Leader of Darkhold
Cohort's Cohort: Ashemi

I rest my case. :D

I was with you up to Manshoon, after that.. ya lost me.

I assume Sememmon is Manshoon's right hand man, but who's Ashemi? The shoe-shine boy?

Does the cohort of your cohort gain a half share of the group XP or a half share of a half share for being the cohort of a cohort who gets a half share? Hope this makes sense.

Reading the rules literally on DMG p. 46 and p. 147, no distinction is made between cohorts who follow PCs, NPCs, or other cohorts: "the cohort earns XP at one-half the rate a PC would". That is, you're either a cohort or you're not -- mechanics-wise, the only critical thing is whether the character is being primarily roleplayed by a player or not.

It looks to me like any cohort takes a half-share of experience, as compared to a PC.
