my group just helped a thiefs guild chief to regain power over that guild.

he gave some reward to the players, but one of them gained gems, instead of a item (they are a "silver handler" guild, so they gave silver itens).

do i give xp for the pc who gained the gems (i mean, xp = the gem worth)?

so maybe my question is: when do you gave xp for money?

money they "found" only?
what about if they stole money? of if it was given to them? is this kinda of money worth xp?

In 2e IIRC only rogues get xp for gaining valuables in an adventure.

Everyone gets xp for defeating monsters and for story rewards.

Mages get xp for casting relevant spells.

Warriors gain extra xp based on the HD of monsters they fight.

Priests gain xp for casting spells and using special abilities

Rogues gain xp for loot and skill usage.

That's my memory of the 2e DMG xp section.

By the book? I dunno.

What do I do? Take any excuse to give the PCs XP for treasures. The only rule is that you won’t get XP for the same treasure more than once. (Unless it’s an unusual circumstance that I feel deserves it.)

e.g. The PCs defeated a monster and bagged some loot. I gave them the XP for it at the end of the session. They later found out who the treasure rightfully belonged to. They returned it. They kept the XP. If they had stolen it back, they would have not received the XP from it a second time.
