Correct, as I recall McDonald's appealed the decision and won....

Incorrect... they appealed and the decision was knocked down to just under half a million. And for what it was worth, the lawsuit was hardy frivolous... she had 3rd degree burns from the coffee on about 20% of her body. Not to mention the fact that McD had previously settled close to $500,000 worth of other cases over how hot their coffee was. At 185f, a third degree burn takes less than 6 seconds. At 170f, that's closer to 30 seconds.

All of that over a lawsuit that could have been avoided if they'd paid her $1500 in medical bills.

My wife (then girlfriend) worked at McDonalds at the time of the lawsuit. They were required to reduce the temperature at which they served coffee (I don't know if it was a corporate decision or a local manager decision).

A tremendous number of customers complained that the coffee wasn't hot enough to be worth anything and said they were going to go somewhere else for breakfast and coffee if they can't get hot coffee here.

So it looks like it's lose-lose for poor little corporate giants.... Poor dears...

Yeah, it is pretty silly when a group that has worked hard to be the amongst the best in their industry has to worry that somebody without the brains to buy a cupholder for their car is going to ride a no-holds-barred judicial system into a big fat check. :D

Klunk-lunk-a-ding-dong.

We're a little far from Rules; the thread has served its purpose, I think. Note that you can reopen the topic in the oT forum if you have a mind to. :p
