[XP] turning off sound to certain aps?

Is there a simple way to tell windows XP that for instance, I want sound on for firefox but not for IE, or for a game? Or on for I tunes and not for my browser?

Don't think so. Only if the application itself has such an option (i.e. you can turn the sound off in most games as a general setting).

Try settings => control panel => sounds and audio devices => tab sound
You can turn off windows sounds (or change them) also certain windows programs such as active sync, windows messenger, and windows explorer.

You can turn of 'web sounds' in IE:
Internet options => tab advanced => multimedia => play sounds in web pages (also turn off video)
