[XPH] Confirmation on Wilders - Wild Surge Ability

I remember the old days of 3.0 Psionics, when a 20th level psion could fission himself, schism both himselves, then metaconcert.

The whole was greater than the sum of its parts.

Any one else think the wilder is pretty chump? 11 powers... and people complain about the sorc.

And while the wild surge and all is cool, once you start doing it at +2 to +4, your talking a 10% to 20% chance in combat to daze yourself for a round and hurt yourself.

How many wizards take even a 5% spell failure, and this is much worse.

As I understand it, even if you get a backlash from your wild surge you still get off the original power - you just can't do anything next round (which sucks if the power had duration: Concentration...). Also, the wild surge is a net benefit, PP-wise, up to 20th level where the risk equals the reward (wild surge +X saves X PP and has a X*5% chance of making you lose 20 PP meaning you on average lose X PP).

Basically, the boost from the surge itself balances the PP loss on a backlash, and the euphoria balances the daze thing.

Yah, compare a wilder to a bard perhaps... he's more a second rate spellcaster with medium hitpoints, BAB and skillpoints.

But he can cause a lot more damage than most arcane spellcasters.

The one thing that makes the wilder stand out is the full scale of PP he gets.
Yes, he has less powers known, but he can manifest the same as a psion.

Bye
Thanee
