Yet Another Mind Blank Question: Will mind blank protect you from analyze dweomer?

I say no. Analyze Dweomer is divination upon magical effects, not upon the mind of the subject of those effects.

I'd say yes. Mind blank specifically protects against "information gathering by divination spells or effects." I think analyze dweomer definitely qualifies as that. Not to mention that analyze dweomer targets a creature, not a magical effect.

A subsequent question would be: does analyze dweomer work on an object attended by someone under the effects of mind blank? That's trickier, but I'd say yes (provided the owner fails his Will save, of course).

I support TYPO5478's stance on this subject.

Analyze Dweomer is a divination spell that targets one object or creature per caster level.

In addition to protecting against all mind-affecting spells and effects, Mind Blank also protects against "...information gathering by divination spells or effects."

That's the way I ruled it as well. For my follow-up question, will spellcraft (or anything else) help the caster of analyze dweomer figure out what happened? I don't want to give away anything that he's not privy to, but I don't really want to nerf his +31 on Spellcraft.

I'd have done so too.

This isn't spelled out by the rules, so it's your call. With that kind of a Spellcraft bonus, I'd drop him a hint. Something like "You don't detect any magical auras at all on X. It seems a little strange, considering that ornate staff he's carrying, which looks exactly like a Staff of Fire."

Yeah, I agree. The lack of pertinent information should be noted and hinted at--unless the character's Intelligence score is 6 or less. If that's the case, deny everything. :D

Heh. Of course, if your Int is 6, there's a good chance you won't be casting analyze dweomer in the first place. ;)

Agreed with shilsen and Cousin; all those Spellcraft ranks should be good for something. If nothing else, you could argue that analyze dweomer failing is an observable effect of mind blank.

You could of course be a Bard, a Sorcerer or a Cleric using Miracle. Unless, of course, your DM is houseruling that you can't cast spells your character can't spell.

Hmm...stupid archmage.

I don't even bother with spellcraft rolls. I just tell him every spell that is cast. I've already given him a hint, but I'm not sure he followed it. I just think the archmage would know immediately, but then again I had to come here to ask the question . . . :heh:
