...max HP's...

That's so simple and elegant that it boggles the mind. No matter what sort of other fixed hit point system I could consider, I know most of my player's would still want to reach for the dice on the off chance of rolling that high number. This is one all my player's would eagerly support.

errr... I think there is something wrong with the way you are looking at things.

The d4 classes rolling randomly average 2.5 hitpoints per level. The d10 classes rolling randomly average 5.5 hitpoints per level. This is 2.2 times what the d4 classes get. It's like getting d4+3 hitpoints.

Now, if we round up, the d4 classes get 3 hp and the d10 ones get 6 hp. It's only twice what the d4 classes get, buts its still liking getting d4+3 hp. It's not quite as big of an advantage, but its still pretty close. That extra 1/2 hp is a little more important to a d4 classed individual than it is to a d10 one, but its really a small thing. It's certainly not a vast difference.

But your way the d4 classes get 2 hp and the d10 classes get 8 hp. Now the d4 classes are getting 4 times what the d4 classes get. Four is a very different number than 2.2. It's nearly twice as big. Your way is like getting d4+6 hp. Do you really think this is fair?

I'm not a big fan of maximum hit points, but maximum hitpoints is far closer to fair than what you suggest. That way, a d10 class only gets 2.5 times the advantage of a d4 class. That's much closer to 2.2 than 4 is.

If you use the average rounded up method, it vastly benefits lower-HD classes.

Sorcerors and wizards get 3 HP / level (75%); Bards and rogues 4 HP / level (67%); clerics, monks, and rangers 5 HP / level (63%); fighters and paladins 6 (60%); barbarians and knights 7 (58%).

You can see how massively those with d10 and d12 lose out.
This is a bad thing because....?

The question is especially pressing because your system also has some classes "losing out" compared to others, to an even greater degree, and worse, your system has the ones who need the help least getting the extra benefits, not those who need it the most.

I'm not sure it's a huge deal. I've just started a PbP campaign where we get average +1 HP, total rounded up. I'm playing a d6 class with 16 Con, and I end up with 87 HP. The two tanks have around 150 HP each. Granted, they have a larger focus in Con and Improved Toughness, but the difference is still very significant.

The standard rule says you should round down at even levels and round up at odd level ... this prevents you from getting such problems ... every two level any class gets exactly the average points with no rounding problem ...

I have generally used average HP for everything and everyone, FWIW (my other, many and varied house rules notwithstanding.) But I'm a big fan of that 'rules symmetry' thing. Never mind that, though. Suffice it to say, it's been the easiest and best way, IME.
