Could d20 Modern be the secret project? I think contemporary settings was one of the things mentioned on the thread. I dunno, I haven't seen the site so I dunno if Monte could be involved in any way...

Maybe his research on bugs was for a nifty conversion of the Insect Spirits from Shadowrun.

Hmm. Unfortunatly I'm pretty sure Monte hasn't worked on this. Here's the quote from the main page:

d20 Modern will be released in October 2002, and it's a "major new product line that will provide a baseline of rules to run contemporary fantasy campaigns." It will contain 4 campaign models to choose from and rules adaptable for more. It's being designed by Bill Slavicsek, Jeff Grubb and Rich Redman.

No mention whatsoever of Monte. I'm pretty sure that if he was involved it would have been mentioned.
