You roll a 3...

when you are rolling up a character, along with: 14, 16, 17, 18, 18.
The GM says you have to play the character.

Where do you put the 3? Why? What character do you make?

(PS: Assume 3.x, PF or 4E)

Charisma is the traditional dump stat.

Then play whatever you want, as the biggest jerk you can. Fistbeard Beardfist is always fun, as is super-wizard. Alternately, stick it in Int, and play Thog the half-orc barbarian - you won't get any stupider and you will be hell-on-wheels in a fight.

The GM doesn't have to tell me to play that character. I have no idea why anyone would object to those stats. They're awesome! My only worry is that I'll overshadow the rest of the party.

The first arrangement that comes to mind is:

Strength 3
Dexterity 14
Constitution 16
Intelligence 18
Wisdom 17
Charisma 18

...and play a dwarf sorceror (3.X/Pathfinder) or wizard (4E). Not a "Thorin Oakenshield" dwarf, a "Tyrion Lannister" dwarf.

Alternatively, I could put the 3 in Wisdom and play a charismatic lunatic. (If playing 3.X, of course, I'd have to pick up Force of Personality to keep my Will save from being total suck.)

Naturally, it all depends on the character.

I have played pcs with 3s before- Cha a couple times, I think Wis once, maybe Str once?

Charisma is the natural choice, since having it low doesn't hurt you nearly as much as any other stat as long as your class doesn't use it for stuff (3E/PF).

Since the rest are solid, I'd be tempted to play a MAD class like monk, or do a bunch of multiclassing to add various stats to various other things (like Factotum 3 to add Int to all str and dex checks; granted a large number of these class features involve adding CHA to stuff, so maybe don't dump cha afterall).

You're probably even better off in 4e because you can put it anywhere without tanking a defense/save. It would still be a terrible choice to put it in Con, which is probably an argument that Con is too good in 4e. It is sort of the reciprocal to the fact that Cha is probably too weak in 3, demonstrated by the fact that except for a few classes, it is just hands down the obvious assignment.

  1. It depends upon what kind of PC I feel like playing
  2. I'd probably put the 3 in a stat the PC's race gets a bonus in

One thing I would probably do is play a divine caster, psionicist, or an armored arcanist of some kind, because the spells & powers would likely make up for any shortcomings the PC has.

Another possibility would be a big, badass warrior with a heart of gold...and not much of a brain. Think of Dudley Dooright, Mongo, or "The Mighty" Damaramu. Whether Wis or Int became the dump would depend on what kind of dumb brute I wanted to make.

I'd put it in Wis in 4e, become a Bug-Bear Barbarian, and roleplay walking into walls and being completely gullible, but when told I'd been tricked I'd fly into a rage and smash things.
