Time to close this one

Not as many responses to this one as to the dragons and goblins. Not surprising I guess, Mind Flayers are used more sparingly.

Well as usual the choices are hard. In the end I can't decide between Voadam's perfect ambush and Shilsen's Half Orc tumbling down a ziggurat locked in hand to hand battle with an Illithid.

Cookies to both!!

As an aside: all this giving of cookies may be deflating the value of cookies, but what can I do? It's a cookie bonanza!!

cheers all,

PS: I'll put up a new Best Fight... soon as I think of a good one.

I introduced this subplot into a Eberron adaptation of The Red Hand of Doom.

The party encounters a group of servants of the DragonBelow led by a Mind
Flayer, In the first round of combat the MF fires away his mind blast but
everyone saves, things get sour fast for the bad guys and the MF is forced to
escape not before vowing to return (there was kalashtar with a tasty brain in
the group).

As an aside, there was a Dwarf of House Kundarak in the party, the player had
mentioned he wanted to take the Aberrant Dragonmark PrC, so the following
encounter was meant to be a prelude to that.

The mind flayer has been scrying on the party and prepares an ambush, this time
with the support of a few dolgrim snipers and dolgaunt monks.

The mindblast is very effective this time around and the PCs are captured with
relative ease (but lots of resistance)

The kalashtar wakes up in a cold granite table, fastened to the table by the
wrists and ankles, while the rest of the party is being held in some sort of cell.

The kalashtar begins to use his powers to break the bonds, ibut just when he's about
to break free the mind flayer enters, there is a quick mindscape/physical combat, but
the kalashtar had never participated in a psionic combat and is really freaked
out by it, so he focuses in breaking free, which he does. At the same time the party
is escaping from their cell with no equipment, fighting a couple of dolgaunts
monks.

The terrified kalashtar runs away screaming from the lab into a hallway, with
the mind flayer on his heels, the kalashtar bends a corner and runs past the
dwarf. The mind flayer comes around the corner and the dwarf steps in between
the MF and his kalashtar friend (which is what I was waiting to happen)
at this point I describe the manifestation of the aberrant dragonmark
on the dwarf which produces a prismatic wall (or ray don't remember) that
quickly killed the MF, it was a very exciting moment for the group.

Of course the dwarf was still a couple of levels short of being able to take
teh PrC, but dragonmarks are supposed to manifest during stressful
circumstances and i didn't want to hand wave it. I told the PC that he needed
to take the PrC to be able to use it afterwards.

:)

That's really cool. A really tense, dramatic escape situation.

I'd hand out more cookies but I should rein really myself in lest I devalue the whole virtual cookie market.
