I think the Redesigning Rangers etc. threads can lead to some worthwhile discussion. Though not specifically rangers in my case (Mearls put a stake in that one for me with Wildscape.) But there are plenty of other classes that could use some rethinking.

The rest, however, I hold disdain for ranging from "casual disinterest" to "I'll sooner spoon my eyes out than get caught up in this discussion again."

Well to be honest I like discussing things like campaign and adventure ideas people have in mind and are developing. For me these ideas are interesting.

But probably the most interesting thing I find is when folks try to work out what the game means and has meant to them over the years. But NOT edition wars! Edition wars get old real quick. But comparing and contrasting things without wars and rule chewing for me is intersting, especially to see how the game has affected and formed others....

Sigh ... I'm a roleplayer first, then a storyteller. I'm not a metagamer or a grognard. So, my interests naturally lie in these realms.

While you touched on it with the Paladin-Kobold example, you missed one of the larger elephants in the discussion room:

Alignment "debates".

Lanefan

I chose High vs. Low Magic. But my favorites are off-list.
-How do I price XYZ?
-Polymorph revisions (Mine is simple: become the creature, completely (but not in terms of identity))
-Good vampires (there is no such thing!)

The 4th Edition threads are a guilty pleasure of mine. As EricNoah pointed out, it has been beaten to death but still manages to come up every once and awhile with the same predictable results.
I really like speculative 4E threads. It's why I started checking out this site back in 2000, and why I still read it now (news and rumors surrounding the game).

I put down class, but I like threads on how to fix problems in general. Classes are probably the least of my worries on that regard.

To me the strangest one is: "Methods of rolling attribute scores and the statistical mathematics hidden therein." This is merely a couple hours' work with pen & paper, far less with a computer and spreadsheet. I'm not certain what one could discuss on this topic. Perhaps this is people who aren't familiar with prob and stat talking with people who are?

For the record: I don't like Lemon Curry. Never have, never will. (That's Bugaboo you're thinking of; he couldn't get enough.)

The likelihood of you responding this way was about the same as if I had rolled a 18 on 3d6 for my Int -- which is to say, 50/50. :)

Problem player threads are my guilty choice.

I've had my fair share of problem players, but someone has always had worse players and I love reading about them.

It makes my day better because yours was worse ;)
