Reviving this for Christmas 2025. My vote goes to The Snowman. The children's book that led to this is brilliant... not a single word expressed. This 40 plus year old production took an incredible story, transferred it to a different medium, and created something equally beautiful. Amazing.

I love the animation; it's a classic you couldn't get made today. The sequel is pretty good, too, athough not quite as good as the original. Worth watching.

Somewhat related, I'm surprised The Gruffalo and it's sequel never made it to this discussion.

One of my favorites that you just don’t see anymore was another Rankin/Bass special called The Stingiest Man in Town that had Walter Matthau voicing Scrooge and Tom Bosley as “The Humbug”. It’s a pretty straightforward retelling of A Christmas Carol (with the Humbug serving as the narrator) but the animation was always the selling point for me as a kid.

You can still find the video online:

It occurred to me today that the "I have a machine gun now. Ho-ho-ho" scene in Die Hard is kind of D&D-ish. Just the whole looting a better weapon off of a slain enemy thing

Just noticed something. In Snow Miser's song from The Year Without A Santa Claus, during the verse about preferred temperatures, he abruptly switches from farenheit to celcius. "I never want to know a day that's over 40 degrees. I'd rather have it 30, then 20. 10. 5. then let it freeze" The first sentence is presumably in farenheit becuase 40 degrees celcius would be very hot even for summer. But the second part is in celcius because in farenheit temperatures water freezes at 32 degrees, not zero.

I was watching trailers recently and realized that Batman Returns technically could fall under a Christmas Movie.

Not that it's my favorite, but it was funny to think about in regards to this thread.

It's more a Christmas movie than Die Hard
