Your favorite unusual spells

A player in my group (Beguiler) has proved that Solid Fog can be extremely effective in incapacitating enemies, especially in confined areas.

Heh,

My Druid has had some real fun with Sudden Stalagmite. Not only does it make monster kabobs but their friends think twice about messing with you. Even my own party went pale the first time I cast it.

Jack

P.S. Vortex of Teeth and Dinosaur Stampede are definitely fun too.

Beguiler's have some nice stuff too:

Legion of Sentinels (PHB II): This 3rd-level bugger is evil. A 10 foot radius emanation filled with ghostly swordsmen. They can even share a space with another creature. They can only make attacks of opportunity, but God help you if you dare to provoke one.

Nerveskitter (Spell Comp): 1st-level immediate action spell that gives allies +5 to initiative checks.

Phantasmal Assailants (Spell Comp): 2nd-level spell that inflicts 4 points of Dex and Wis damage on a failed Will save, plus 4 more if they then fail a Fort save.

Stay the Hand (PHBII): 2nd-level immediate action spell that forces an opponent to make a Will save to attack you. If they fail, they can pick another target, but with a -4 penalty.

Baleful Transposition (2nd-level) and Benign Transposition (1st-level), both from the Spell Compendium are great low level spells. There are so many different tactical options you could do with them.

Grease is also a favourite of mine.

Ray of Enfeeblement is probably my favourite 1st-level spell though. The fact that it doesn't allow a saving throw just makes it even better.

Olaf the Stout

Alter Fortune - PHB2, immediate action, subject rerolls one roll, cost: 200 XP

Absolutely vital for combats at the higher levels, so it isn't just about who rolls a 1 first.

Simulacrum - "Yay! We killed the bad guy!" "Drat! Maybe not..."

Never noticed vortex of teeth. That will go great with the alienist I'm statting up. The party has killed (retired?) three of his simulacra, and he's getting a bit tired of it.

Unceasing Vigilance of the Holy Sentinel - 2e Cleric spell. It simply removed the need for sleep for someone on watch, but it has the coolest name for any spell. Much better than the unfortunately named Frisky Chest.

Dissension's Feast - In a highly political situation? Need to know where the lines are drawn? Invite them to dinner. I once blew a plotline wide open with this spell. We were invited to a party by a fire temple in which two factions were forming. I (an air priest) gave the party Goodberries to stop the munchies, snuck in Invisible and Flying, and cast this little sucker as the food was perpared. Once the meal was served, tempers began to flare (literally). I cast Sanctuary and took notes.

As the OP was asking about 1e spells this narrows the field considerably.

There is the PH, UA and OA, for big sources of spells (we always treated wu jen spells as being available to MUs), a few modules have the odd spell here or there, and there are home brews.

Isle of the Ape (1e high level module) has a Magic Missile variant that fires serpents at the target which would be a fun variant to try.

If you consider Basic D&D and 2e spells as compatible for 1e this opens up the field considerably. Many nice Forgotten Realms spells from various sources, and the 2e diablo book is chock full of great blasting ones, though both sources tend to up the power level a little on spells.

I read him to be saying that he was tired of people using the same old spells they'd been using since 1e. :)

Anyway. Great new spells:

Solid Fog -- it's a barrier, it's a hiding place, it's a cushion (feather fall for any number of critters).

Stone Shape -- been around forever, still fantastically useful.

Cheers, -- N

Could be, but I wouldn't think people would go to dragonsfoot to talk about 3e spells. ;)
