I voted 4 but 3 - 7 is probably better. Those are levels where the PCs are ahead of the crowd and thus legitamately 'heroes' but don't yet have ridiculous power levels. I tend to start play at 3 and the highest I've been is L12

I agree. I start 'em all at 1st, and by 4th they're actually starting to get a name, able to hold their own for more than a few monsters, and the personalities are stabilizing. This is the level range I ask them to come up with a group name if they don't have one also.

If the story demands demons and liches but the players prefer to play levels 5-8 then I'll change the rules before I force the players to change. This is a pretty good example where the rules should serve the story and not vice versa. Weakening demons and liches a little is easier to do in D&D than rewriting the entire game to make levels 12+ more fun.

This is my POV exactly. :)

I was feeling a bit peevish this morning. Sorry about that. Really.
... What?! Don't look at me that way. Like the rest of you haven't whined about shallow, petty issues before?
Anyway. Bygones and whatnot.

S'ok :shakes:

and again, sorry if the first post was offensive.

I picked 12th.

Can have the cool abilities by then.

Can face the cool monsters like demons and liches by then.

And iterative attacks are still only a minor nuissance when it comes to dragging out combat.
This is my feeling as well. I know dozens of DMs here on these boards love coming up with a myriad ways to reuse kobolds and goblins and orcs, but to be honest I'm tired of them. I want my PC to be powerful enough to challenge the big boys. Demons, Slaadi, Githyanki, Dragons, Liches, Fire Giants, etc. etc.

I'd have preferred being able to pick multiple levels to represent a range. That way we could see where the most ranges overlapped, as well. As a range I'd probably go 9th-16th or so.

My favoured range would be 5-8, but the journey from 1-5 is good too as long as the first few levels' advancement is pretty rapid, ca 2+ current level number of sessions to advance is good; eg 3 to reach 2nd, then 4 to reach 3rd, 5 to reach 4th, 6 to reach 5th.
