I've never seen a greater mimic, but unless their disguise checks are crazy good, I think the search check should have worked. Or at least the dm would have allowed the search check to grant you a spot check to check for the mimic.

How do you know that the mimic didn't roll a 20 on its Disguise check?

It sounds like the search check DID work (hence why the DM let him get away). Had the search (or spot, or whatever) failed, the mimic would've just munched him immediately in the surprise round.

A common misperception.

I don't want to get into this whole debate, but I will say that there's no consensus on this being a misconception; many folks, including myself, believe that you're attaching the wrong meaning to the rule passage you quoted. We've had multipage threads about it in the past, and I don't think it's accurate to consider this a straightforward misconception.
